Reports: Mets Waive Ex-Top Prospect Fernando Martinez
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Fernando Martinez was once considered to be the future of the Mets.
Now the former top prospect's major league future doesn't seem so certain.
The Mets have placed Martinez and reliever Daniel Herrera on waivers, according to multiple reports.
The moves were reportedly made to make room for outfielder Scott Hairston and shortstop Ronny Cedeno on the 40-man roster.
Martinez can return to the minor leagues if he clears waivers.
One source told the Newark Star-Ledger that Martinez couldn't be counted on with his history of injuries. The 23-year-old was diagnosed with mild arthritis in his right knee after the 2010 season.
The outfielder hit .183 with 12 RBIs in 47 career games with the Mets.
