Police Investigate Stabbing Of Woman On Overpass In N.J.

PARAMUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Along Route 4, where strip malls abound and NJ Transit bus stops are peppered along the way, a 19-year-old woman was attacked on a stairway.

"It was an aggressive attack. It was unwarranted," said Captain Ken Ehrenberg of Paramus Police.

The victim had just walked across the Spring Valley Road Overpass at 10:45 p.m. Thursday.

"She was actually walking across the highway from the other side, and she was a resident who lived on that side of the highway," said Ehrenberg told CBS 2's John Slattery. "She was going home at that time."

Police say it was a passerby who noticed the woman on the stairway and she'd been stabbed in the abdomen.

"While he's going up the staircase, he observed the 19-year-old female laying on a landing. He notified 911," said Ehrenberg.

Police today were combing the area for a possible weapon and any other forensic evidence. The teenage victim was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for surgery.

"The 19-year-old has one stab wound to her. We believe in the short time we were able to talk to her she was the victim of a robbery," Ehrenberg said.
