NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — The stars came out to shine at Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards, but as in any contest there were hits and misses.

Life & Style magazine’s Cristina Gibson told CBS2’s Dana Tyler that last night’s show was a study in contrast, with some stars wearing jewels and others opting for a paler look.

“There was a lot of color on the carpet, you saw red, you saw yellow, you saw a lot of jewel tones as well,” she said.

Life & Style’s hands down favorite was Angelina Jolie, Gibson said that her outfit stole the scene.

“She was actually wearing an Atelier Versace dress, pink silk with red accent, red purse, red lips, she just looked amazing,” said Gibson.

There were plunging necklines and kicky fish tail hemlines, Charlize Theron’s couture Dior gown had a little bit of everything.

“She was showing some skin. She showed some leg, she looked stunning,” Gibson added.

The only male who made a fashion statement was Ricky Gervais. Gibson withheld judgement.

“I don’t know if it worked for him or not. Clearly he’s not afraid to take risks,” she said.

But some stars didn’t shine as brightly as others.

Life & Style said that actress Sara Michelle Gellar’s blue and white, tie dye ball gown was a definite miss.

“She said her two-year-old daughter helped her pick it out, we’re thinking maybe next time she should use a stylist,” said Gibson.

But Gellar wasn’t the only star who came under fire, Gibson said that Zooey Dechanel looked like she didn’t know what to do with her hair.

“She had kind of weird sideburn type of thing going on. I didn’t know if it was a retro 50s look  but it wasnt working for her.”

Even Meryl Streep wasn’t safe. Streep may have won for “The Iron Lady”, but Life & Style gave her basic black dress and pony tail combo a ‘thumbs down’.

“I’d like to see her change it up and do something chic and different and surprise us. Its awards season.  It’s the globes.  put your best foot forward,” said Gibson.

If you didn’t get enough of the red carpet on Sunday night, the Oscars are just a month away.
