NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A suspect who was arrested in Spain on charges he killed a Westport, Conn. jeweler and then stole $300,000 worth of diamonds has killed himself in a Spanish prison, according to reports.

WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau On The Story

Andrew Robert Levene was arrested Monday and charged with federal murder, robbery and firearm offenses in the Dec. 8 shooting of 65-year-old Yekutiel Zeevi, the owner of YZ Manufacturers LLC.

Federal investigators said Levene made an appointment to buy $300,000 in diamonds, but instead shot Zeevi and his associate, Ronen Konfino, before running off with the jewels. Konfino survived the shooting.

Levene has been awaiting extradition from Spain, but on Thursday, the Hartford Courant reported that law enforcement officials were notified that Levene had committed suicide.

No other details were available.
