Bloomberg: No Parade For Iraq War Vets In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City will not hold a parade for Iraq war veterans because military officials feel it would be premature.

On his Friday appearance on WOR Radio, the mayor said that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin Dempsey and other Army officials “made it clear” to the city that “they do not think a parade is appropriate now” because so many other troops are still serving overseas.

In December, a Pentagon spokesman said New York had yet to make a formal proposal for a parade. He said officials were grateful communities were finding ways to recognize the sacrifices of troops and their families.

Did you read the story the Mayor was told not to have it by our goverment officials if you want someone to blame go to the big White House.

    • no chicken hawks

I blame former occupant of the White House and others that led to 5,000 of our best coming home in a box and trillions in debt associated with it. They don’t need or want a dopey parade to make YOU feel good. How about some meaningful health care, job placement, housing, etc.

Blame the White House for what idiot?? If anything it’s the military’s call. Besides why is St. Louis holding one??”ST. LOUIS — Looking around at the tens of thousands of people waving American flags and cheering, Army Maj. Rich Radford was moved that so many braved a cold January wind Saturday in St. Louis to honor people like him: Iraq War veterans.”

it has been 42 years since i left Viet Nam, nobody ever said anything about a parade for those who still around, we went trough hell for our country and hardly any thank you from the people of the USA

    • Megan

Don’t you feel like the service members now deserve better, then? I’m sorry for what you went through. Children are taught about it in school now and have the utmost respect. Don’t feel like your service has gone unappreciated.

  • RS

As long as there is a parade set for sometime in the future. Quite frankly, I see no reason after 10+ years to have a parade now and one set for the future. Considering the city has parades for just about anything! Our troops have fought and given their lives so another tragic attack on our city or on American soil will not take place again. They are heroes.

  • kevin

    Hey Vets I cant give a parade but;
Thank you all for what you have done and suffered for the rest of us. I know many of you have been to hell and back, with few really understanding what you have lost in the process.
It will take time to heal; I advise you to surround yourself with family and friends and learn to leave any disturbing thoughts behind. It won’t be easy; love and understanding will help, as well as talking will. Again, you should know how much we appreciate what you have suffered so that we might be free, thank you and best wishes for the rest of your life.

  • Pete

No parade in New YORK City for the war vets who RISKED THEIR LIVES partly to defend the bloated tightwad wallet of the mayor of New YORK city.

No parade in New YORK City for the 9/11 responders who RISKED THEIR LIVES at the World Trade Center RIP (located in New YORK City, including some who are now gravely ill due to toxins they were exposed to).

But one (quite possibly two) parade(s) for the New JERSEY Giants football players who make millions while “working” about 5 hours per day/ 6 months per year. And of course NOT RISKING THEIR LIVES.

The saddest part is that I believe it. SMH.

    • sk

your’e right! its sad what our priorities are!

  • Nat Love

No parade for the Vets! then no parade for the Giants if they are victorious in the Superbowl. We will always have troops overseas!

    • Kevin

Agreed, no parade for the Giants. Afterall, there are still football games next year, and the following year, etc… Maybe they can have a parade sometime in the future when all football has been completed.
