Bloomberg: No Parade For Iraq War Vets In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City will not hold a parade for Iraq war veterans because military officials feel it would be premature.

On his Friday appearance on WOR Radio, the mayor said that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin Dempsey and other Army officials "made it clear'' to the city that "they do not think a parade is appropriate now" because so many other troops are still serving overseas.

In December, a Pentagon spokesman said New York had yet to make a formal proposal for a parade. He said officials were grateful communities were finding ways to recognize the sacrifices of troops and their families.
