Falling Cart At Bronx Shopping Center Nearly Kills 2 Deliverymen

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two men were injured -- one critically -- Monday night after being slammed by a falling shopping cart in the Bronx.  The incident is eerily similar to an incident in Harlem last year that left a woman in a coma.

Police said that around 5 p.m. two deliverymen, ages 30 and 52, were standing on the ground floor of a parking garage outside Home Depot at the Gateway Center in Mott Haven when someone pushed or threw a blue shopping cart over a third-story landing.

Both men suffered serious head trauma and were rushed to Lincoln hospital. Authorities said they are looking for "at least" one suspect who was seen leaving the scene.

Gabriel Degante is still shaken up after witnessing two of his friends nearly getting killed by the falling cart.

"I'm standing right here and when we see the cart coming down -- the shopping cart -- It crashed on my friend.  Two of my friends," Degante told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez, explaining what happened.

The incident is strikingly similar to what happened last October outside a Target store in Harlem.

In that incident, two 12-year-old boys pushed a cart off a fourth-floor walkway.  The cart struck and nearly killed 47-year-old Marion Salmon Hedges, leaving her in a coma for a period of time and requiring months of rehabilitation.

Authorities are now going over surveillance video to see if they can get a better look at the suspect or suspects in the Bronx incident.

The injured 52-year-old man underwent surgery Monday night and remains in critical condition.
