Investigators Calling Yonkers Apartment Fire Suspicious

YONKERS, NY (CBSNewYork) — Investigators are calling a Yonkers apartment building fire suspicious.

The three-alarm fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. Monday at a building on Lincoln Place Monday afternoon. Flames tore through the building and smoke could be seen for miles. Officials said neighboring were evacuated as a precaution.

No serious injuries reported, but seven families were left homeless.

The American Red Cross is helping those displaced by the fire.

    Jack O’Riley, 28, and Diane Lewis, 48, were the third-floor residents who went into their neighbor’s apartment after hearing her in the hallway with her children and tried to douse the smoke they saw near a window with first sugar, then flour and, finally, water… Unfortunately you can’t douse smoke … Also unfortunately they didn’t apply the ingredients to the flames … they would have ended up with a cake. I hope the injured recuperate quickly. Thankfully no one was killed in this disaster.
