Brooklyn Suspect In NYPD Cop Shooting Charged With Attempted Murder

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The suspect in Tuesday night’s shooting of a New York City cop in Brooklyn has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, among other charges.

Police said 21-year-old Luis Ortiz shot Officer Kevin Brennan, 29, in the head following a stare down between Ortiz and another man.  Ortiz fired at that other individual, which prompted the police response.

Brennan is in critical but stable condition, but doctors said he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Even in handcuffs, Ortiz tried to brag and boast as he was being led out of the precinct in Williamsburg. Ortiz was greeted by screams from a women in the street and a cousin and other relatives, CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman was told, yelling in support.

Ortiz shouted at reporters, telling them to “take a picture of me.”  He  also told his family that he loved them as he was led from the 90th Precinct to Brooklyn Criminal Court for arraignment.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said surveillance video shows Ortiz pointing a gun at the officer just before the cop was shot in the head at point-blank range. Kelly also described the violent scene that was seen on surveillance video as he spoke with reporters, including 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa.

“You also see that Ortiz has a gun in his hand, they struggle, fall into sort of an alcove, where you can’t actually see the shooting. But you see Ortiz with his arm around the officer’s head and then he shot.  He doesn’t move after he’s shot,” Kelly said.

Ortiz has also been charged with assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

As Brennan was rushed into emergency surgery, police said they were able to track down and apprehend Ortiz. Detectives said they also recovered a revolver at the scene.

At the news conference Tuesday night, Kelly showed reporters a jar containing the bullet that was removed from behind Brennan’s right ear.

“What amounts to a whole bullet was removed from the base of the officer’s skull right in the emergency room,” he said. “And he is one lucky young man.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Brennan at Bellevue late Tuesday night.

“We have someone who has dedicated his life to protecting all of us who has had a much too close brush with death,” Bloomberg said. “God in this case was kind. It could have turned out an awful lot worse.”

Officer Brennan lives in Garden City Park and is the father of a 6-week-old girl named Maeve. Brennan’s friends and family are still shaken from the news.

“He’s a good kid, he’s a great guy. He’s a great cop,” said Brennan’s uncle, Michael Brennan.

“Never want to hear of this happening to anybody. It was a shock,” said neighbor Ron Artusa.

“Thank God he’s OK, that’s the most important thing,” said John Skinner, a friend and retired NYPD detective who was also injured on the job and says he feels for Brennan’s young wife. “You dread that day when that police car comes in front of your house and they have to give you some bad news.”

Resident Kathy Ketarena was relieved when she learned the officer would survive his wounds.

“You feel good that he is alive,” she said. “He’s a young man and has got so much to live for.”

Cops said Ortiz was already wanted for questioning in the New Year’s Day murder of 34-year-old Shannon McKinney. Authorities also said Ortiz has at least 14 other prior arrests.

Why do I always smell like wet dog? I wish my girls big fat stomach was a baby bump and that I wasn’t sterile. I’m a loser

      Stop molesting dogs loser.

14 priors? Good Lord! How many second chances should a thug get? Give this lout a “Bad Dude” hearing, publicly string him up and leave his body to slowly twist in the wind.

  3. Rodin says:

WHY is my comment “awaiting moderation”? I find All babies are ugly, noisy and smell. That’s why we have no kids and three Dogs. Parents are worse, “entitled.” I also find pregnant women ugly and wish they stopped displaying their “baby bumps.”

Is the baby the measure of officer Brennan’s worth? Would the crime be less of a crime were he childless and single? Pics of babies just fan the fires. They’re tear jerkers to ramp up public anger and sell news.

Go “moderate” all the racist rants.

    1. Rodin says:

BTW, Luis Ortiz a.k.a. ‘BABY’ Ortiz.

Why are you so bitter Rodin?? Just realize that you’ll never get a baby the way “DO IT”!!!!

      1. Rodin says:

Why do you assume I am? I never wanted one. I’ve had other priorities which, to me, are far more important and fulfilling. Live your own life.

  4. Trainer of ghetto monkeys says:

His name maybe Ortiz but looking at him his family is mixed with Knee Grows

  5. Ortiz is a Spanish Speaking Knee Grow says:

Ortiz is gay that’s why he has corn rows. Is family is garbage just like your family.

    1. Rodin says:

Proof that gays are just like everyone else?

I hope Luis Ortiz spends at least 50 years in prison.

    1. Attach birth control to welfare checks says:

I hope Ortiz’s family uses birth control

      1. Vernon Hell says:

The birth control should be enforced. Snip, snip.

  9. Capt. Bill's Daughter says:

get well officer brennan. you are indeed a lucky young man on many levels. my dad was nypd for 30+ years (back in the “old” days). he worked some of the same streets you patrol. glad they caught the perp. the extended family of the long blue line has you and your family in its thoughts and prayers. the perp shouldn’t have been out on the street. the shame is we’ll all be shelling out coin for his court appointed lawyer. he needs a 4 ft in diameter cell. no windows/very little electricity/no computer, no phone, 2 meals a day, no tv, no free education. time for the piper to be paid.

  10. John says:

Ray Kelly and the Mayor have lost what little brains they had .Why would you show the bullet that struck this hero with blood in a jar to the public..This is not a reality TV show, however clearly you two have lost touch with reality..

    1. mat says:

Hey John I hear you BUT, let the GOOD people of the city see the dangers our brave officers face everyday. Here was a guy with a wife and new born protecting us from violent felons. He was doing the right thing where the guy who shot him who was from that community was doing the wrong thing. It’s a testament to the good guy not the bad one. I get what you mean but in this case I think they did the right thing.

  11. Junior says:

Get well soon Officer Brennan so you can go home and be with your wife and beautiful baby!

  12. Lauren H. says:

These problems wouldnt exist if the drug laws weren’t so stupid. Pay attention here, don’t sign up for a job like this if you don’t plan to chase down criminals.

  13. Bill says:

Hurry home Officer, your little angel is waiting for you!!!

    1. Rodin says:

      Blue angel.

hmmm. what I want to know is how he returned fire after getting shot in the skull. amazing.

    1. Jean says:

I don’t remember hearing that he returned fire at any time. Apparently, the suspect that was fleeing turned and fired. He didn’t have a chance to discharge his weapon.

      1. Rodin says:

        You’re not following.

  16. Michelle says:

Something is not right with this story. You’re not allowed to carry a gun in NYC, so how could someone get shot? Oh that’s right… Only criminals are allowed to carry concealed weapons there.

    1. Corn Rows on a boy is proof they R gay says:

Your aloud to carry guns in New York only if your on Welfare and have cornrows.

      1. Rodin says:

But not if you can’t contract “you are” properly into “you’re” or spell “aLLoWEd” correctly. You ‘musta’ come from the same batch.
