NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) Mayor Michael Bloomberg is pledging money to Planned Parenthood to offset funds that were cut by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation.

WCBS 880′s Rich Lamb On The Story

The billionaire mayor has promised to match future donations to Planned Parenthood up to $250,000, mayoral spokeswoman Samantha Levine said Thursday. The organization uses the money for breast cancer screenings.

Bloomberg, a Democrat turned Republican turned independent, said politics “have no place” in health care.

“Breast cancer screening saves lives, and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care,” he said in a written statement. “We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.”

“The Mayor is stepping up and giving this gift is saying ‘do not politicize this issue.’ Women’s health just matters too much,” President and CEO of Planned Parenthood NYC, Joan Malin, told CBS 2′ s Dave Carlin.

Many donors and cancer research advocates were outraged after the Komen foundation said it was cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood because of new criteria for giving grants.

Critics, however, accused it of bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists.

On Wednesday, the Komen Foundation issued a statement saying “Our grant-making decisions are not about politics…Any efforts to make this political or leverage it for fundraising purposes would be a disservice to women.”

The national-level Planned Parenthood is the focus of a Capitol Hill investigation into its use of taxpayer funds.  Komen Foundation founder Nancy Brinker said that probe was a factor in the decision to cut funding for Planned Parenthood.

“Regrettably this strategic shift will affect any number of long-standing partners, but we have always done what is right for our organization,” she said, adding “the scurrilous accusations being hurled at this organization are profoundly hurtful to so many of us.”

Thousands of messages have swamped Komen’s Facebook page — the vast majority of them being negative.  The Executive Director of Komen in Los Angeles has also resigned her post as a result of the decision.

“People all across the country have stepped forward in the last 48 hours to offer help and support, and the mayor’s donation will help ensure that no woman is denied breast cancer services because of right-wing political pressure campaigns,” Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a written statement.

The mayor sent out a Twitter message Thursday afternoon urging other donors to come forward.

“Join me in standing with Planned Parenthood to protect and promote women’s health,” he tweeted.

I guess New Yorkers love a Mayor with ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE OF HUMOR, NO JOY, NO SMILES…THE GUY IS GLUM ALL THE TIME.

HEY, GLUMBO! SMILE ONCE A YEAR WILL YOU?

100$ TO ANYONE WHO POSTS A PICTURE OF BLOOMBERG ACTUALLY SMILING

    • Gorbud

The Mayor is one of the !% that run the country. He was a Democrat before he was a Republican before he was an Independent. He is just a little power seeker who wants to control everything within his grasp. If Planned Parenthood was around when he was born we would probably not have to look on his ugly mug today.

Bloomberg was once sued by an employee who, in asking for maternity leave, was told by Bloomberg to “kill it.”

    They settled out of court.

    Nice guy.

Bravo to another qualified journalism school graduate. Watch how the author presents both sides of the story, in accord with journalistic ethics:

“Many donors and cancer research advocates were outraged after the Komen foundation said it was cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood because of new criteria for giving grants.

Critics, however, accused it of bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists.”

So one side is critical and the other is outraged?? Really well done.

Good observation. It used to be called “persuasive journalism”, now it’s better known as outright “media bias”. THIS is what the Communist controlled universities and government run schools have been producing for about 50 years, advancing the Communist agenda to take over America.

GOOGLE: The 45 Communist Goals To Take Over America” and read the list. It was entered into the U.S. Congressional record in 1963, the year they killed JFK, the half-decent “democrat”. From that moment on, it was the beginning of the “American Communist Revolution, led by LBJ and his Communist comrades in Congress. They began the massive social programs from Medicare to The Great War On Poverty” to create a completely dependent class of citizens and they’re nearing the goal line under the current Communist dictator squatting in OUR White House. One more term of this usurper and the United States of America will be finished!

He forgot to mention that P.P. was ripping of the Komen Foundation by referring most women seeking breast screening to other agencies were stealing the grant money to use for abortions and related services. Women’s health is the usual method of twisting language to obscure rather then make clear whats being said. Abuse of granted monies is an everyday occurrence in the real world. s.K. Foundation is just one group that would not stand for it. Now the Liberal kill machine will attack it all day long.

  • JMWinPR

Let’s examine this a bit. MM is a billionaire. (Funny, his initials are the same as my Ex, both are nuts) 250000 to a billionaire is the same as 250 to a millionaire or the 25 bucks to someone with 100K. Not much of a donation. Oh wait, liberals don’t donate to a charity unless they can get something in return.

    • Gorbud

The man is a MULTI Billionaire so it might be like $2.50.

  • jdmojito

Politics have no place in healthcare, agreed. And neither do abortions, especially for the person that winds up in the trashcan.

  • TOTS

Good to know Mr. Bloomberg is just another run of the mill politician. It’s quite ironic, a politician complaining about politics. I think either he’s either stupid or dishonest.

  • czervik

What a bunch of crap! Planned Parenthood doesn’t do breast cancer screenings. They refer you to someone who will. This is all about abortion, cheap and easy. Susan G. Komen can give the money to an organization that does the screenings themselves. Breast cancer screenings will be more readily available through this decision, not less.

Planned Parenthood can refer women to any of the organizations that offer those screenings…unless it’s all politics for them.

Then there’s the phenomenon of pinkwashing, which Komen unabashedly created and encourages. Pinkwashing is the term used to describe when corporations claim to care about breast cancer by promoting “pink” products or a “pink ribbon” campaign (especially each October during “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”) while continuing to sell products that are linked to the disease. (One notorious example from a few Octobers ago was a company that promoted “Pinky” vodka to women. Alcohol consumption is generally considered a risk factor for breast cancer.)

Komen has even engaged in some pinkwashing itself. For several years, Komen — with the help of TPR Holdings, a New York-based company that makes many colognes and cosmetics and which donates $1 million a year to the charity — has marketed its own perfume, “Promise Me.” It turns out, however, that the perfume contains several toxic chemicals (not listed on the label), including ones suspected of being carcinogenic. (Confronted with these findings, Komen said last fall that it is reformulating the perfume.)

But “Promise Me” has another problem. Like so many of the other pinkwashing products hawked by companies, not much of the perfume’s purchase price actually goes to breast cancer research. According to the math done by one group of anti-pinkwashing activists, 3 percent of the perfume’s $59 price tag ends up being spent on breast cancer research. That’s $1.51 per bottle.

No wonder many breast cancer activists and survivors see red whenever they see pink.

The left, killing off their future political base… Now that I think about it, maybe this is a good thing? Bloomberg needs to give more.

Despite her belief in white supremacy and eugenics, Margaret Sanger is glorified by PP on its website, including this line: “Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, is one of the movement’s great heroes.”

The truth? Sanger was a devout racist who created the Negro Project designed to sterilize unknowing black women and others she deemed as undesirables of society? The founder of Planned Parenthood said, “Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated.” http://blackgenocide.org/planned.html

    • Yankee Doodle Retrocon

you are very correct about Sanger (i don’t know about that specific quote), but she was a devout believer in eugenics.

Bloomberg? Of course he supports PP, it helps keep “target” populations down in his over crowded city.

What i don’t understand, however, is why the A-A community continues to support him and the other PP supporters??? Some form of self-destructive tendency?? Or simple brainwashing?

    • RandyC0609

      Amazing post and spot on!

  • Not in NY

There is something missing from this story. The fact that studies show over and over that women who get abortions are much more likely to get breast cancer!

    • RandyC0609

ABSOLUTELY. The endocrine gets completely out of wack. There is a direct link

      • chris

As a pro-life physician I have significant doubts about a direct link between abortion and breast cancer. If there is actually a statistical increased risk of breast cancer in those who have had abortions it is more likely that women who have abortions are also more likely to do other stuff that contributes to breast cancer (like smoking and alcohol abuse) than women who have never had an abortion.

We dont have to make up reasons why abortion is bad. Killing an unborn baby is bad enough just from an ethical standpoint and the emotional impact on the women who gets the abortion. When we use arguments of questionable validity such as this link to breast cancer we weaken our strong ethical argument against abortion.

This whole story about Koman giving money to PP is illustrative about how some charities we might support may then secretively give our donation away to another group that we would never donate to. I will never give a donation to Koman again as long as they give grants to PP.

  • DR

If Bloomberg believes that politics have no place in healthcare, will he demand that Planned Parenthood dismantle its massive lobbying efforts? PP just released a political TV ad this week.

  • Va_reader

CBS and AP get it wrong by paragraph two. The statement, “The organization [Planned Parenthood] uses the money for breast cancer screenings,” is simply FALSE.

Planned Parenthood DOES NOT PERFORM cancer screenings of ANY TYPE. All they do is refer clients to a provider that does (just like the Yellow Pages).

The only services provided directly by Planned Parenthood are birth control and abortions. They DO NOT conduct cancer screenings of any sort.

Komen cut the funds for one simple reason: it is a BREAST CANCER CHARITY, and Planned Parenthood — it’s claims to the contrary — does not actually do anything in regard to that issue.

  • magnacarta

Being a true Fascist in all he does, Bloomberg just verifies it with this act of Murder.

    Omar, you’re an idiot.

In the wake of this week’s announcement that Susan G. Komen for the Cure will no longer be awarding grants to Planned Parenthood, the breast cancer organization’s donations have gone up 100 percent in the last two days.

    NY liberal stupidity – again!

  • PL

Planned Parenthood does not provide “health services” – they do abortions. This is a continuing effort to redefine words to fit their agenda.

  • Barbara Press

    test

  • Life first

I am extremely disappointed in the mayor. The bulk of Planned Parenthood’s profits come from killing babies. They do not even offer mammograms and women can get screenings at real health centers instead of a place that is in reality anti-women and anti-life. The right to life is not a political issue; it is a human rights issue. Supporting Planned Parenthood in any way is supporting an ongoing mass murder of innocent lives! The Susan G. Komen foundation is to be commended and applauded for this decision!

That’s part of the new Faux News talking points they e-mail to their sheep, I mean viewers every night correct?

    • Kelly

Do you realize how brain dead you sound? Seriously, Faux news?? How original is that? I receive emails from the Obama campaign all the time telling me what to think. Last I checked, I’d never received a talking points email from ‘Faux news’.

    • spock

actually if people followed their religion, there would be no sexual tranmitted diseases that spread.

You know Planned Parenthood (babykiller Inc) could get more donations if they ran the Advertisement – ‘Donate Tady get rid of a Liberal tomorrow!!’
