Bronx Residents Take To The Streets To Protest Ramarley Graham Killing By NYPD
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Bronx community was demanding justice Monday night as hundreds of people took their anger and frustration to the streets in the aftermath of the NYPD shooting of an unarmed teenager.
They walked the streets chanting, “no justice, no peace!”
Now, a community’s anger is simmering. They marched on to the police precinct that is home to the officers who shot and killed 18-year-old Ramarley Graham last week.
“They just killed him on the spot, and it’s not right,” resident Elizabeth Owens told CBS 2’s Sean Hennessey.
Video obtained Monday by CBS 2 shows undercover police pursuing Graham, who it was believed had a gun on him. Moments later Graham enters his home, followed by police who try repeatedly to kick the door down. A downstairs tenant eventually let police in and they then confronted their suspect, and shot him in the bathroom believing he had pulled a gun.
“They are murderers. Get it in your head. We are tired,” resident Yolanda Matthews said.
Police said Graham was flushing marijuana down the toilet when they found him.
The fact that officers were in the teen’s home at all had hundreds outraged Monday night.
“We all going to be targets. We all going to be targets and there will be none of us left,” said Leona Virgo, the deceased teen’s sister.
Virgo and Graham’s brother urged the crowd to stand up to injustice.
“We are not sheep. We are not going to be contained,” Franclot Graham said.
At the family’s home, where a memorial grows is growing the crowd rallied against what they said were repeated police crimes, something Graham’s father said cost him dearly.
“At the end of the day we don’t want to see anymore youth drop out like this,” Frank Graham said.
“I’m here to put a stop to the unlawfulness of the NYPD,” added Ainsley Lewis.
Supporters of Ramarley Graham said the gauntlet has been thrown down, and that they’ll be out here often reminding police of exactly what happened.
