NEW YORK (WFAN) — The Yankees have added some potential left-handed power with Russell Branyan.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Yankees have signed Branyan to a minor-league deal.

The big DH-utility man is expected to compete for a bench spot in spring training.

“Big power,” tweeted Heyman, “nice insurance.”

The 36-year-old had a down year in 2011, batting .197 with five home runs and 14 RBI with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Branyan’s best year came in 2009, when he slugged 31 home runs and 76 RBI for the Seattle Mariners.
