Sandy Alderson: 'Mets Only Reimburse For Gas At A Downhill Rate'

NEW YORK  (WFAN) -- Sandy Alderson, New York's next great comic?

For his Twitter debut Thursday, the Mets' general manager (@MetsGM) couldn't resist poking fun at his team's financial woes.

"Getting ready for Spring Training-Driving to FL but haven't left yet," he wr0te. "Big fundraiser tonight for gas money. Also exploring PAC contribution."

On Sunday, the Jerry Seinfeld-esque one-liners continued.

"Will have to drive carefully on trip," Alderson posted. "Mets only reimburse for gas at a downhill rate. Will try to coast all the way to FL."

Alderson was responding in jest to an article which pointed out his decision to drive to Mets camp at Port St. Lucie, team spokesman Jay Horwitz told The Associated Press last week.

"We're driving to St. Lucie because our dog (Buddy) doesn't like to fly," Alderson also tweeted Thursday. "His complaint: Where I sit, no lights and no stews."

He followed that up Friday with tweet No. 3: "Prepping for trip. Bought 4 like-new tires at chop shop across from Citi. He threw in free wiper fluid. Better than the Wheeler deal!"

Faced with dwindling attendance and an upcoming trial brought by the trustee seeking to recover money for the victims of Bernard Madoff, the Mets are trying to raise money by selling minority shares of the team at $20 million apiece.
