MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The owners of nearly two dozen cars are calling their insurance companies Sunday.

Police are investigating after someone apparently used those vehicles for target practice. The crime spree took place between 6 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday  on residential streets in Massapequa and Massapequa Park.

They confirm 21 cars were targeted. Some of the victims say they’ll be paying out of pocket, because their insurance doesn’t cover glass.

Victim Dan Flannelly ruled out gunfire after examining his car’s shattered back window.

“The dogs started barking and my wife came out and the next thing you know there were five or six Nassau County Police officers here so they responded pretty quick,” he told CBS 2.

“Kind of unusual for a pellet gun. It would penetrate the glass but I don’t think it would project the glass that far up. I think this might’ve been a bat,” he told 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon.

“I honestly think it’s like two kids, one driving and one every five minutes getting out and hitting with a baseball bat. It could’ve been a carload of kids and they’re all taking turns whacking,” he added.

Another victim, Vince Thompson, wondered why he his vehicle was targeted.

“Kids got to be kids, but they shouldn’t do this kind of stuff. I know this is a very dark street. From time to time I see kids sitting in their cars, drinking or whatever. I kind of just stare them down a little bit and then they leave,” he said.

Thompson also believes the vandals used a baseball bat.

“It couldn’t have been a BB gun because I had glass, I just cleaned glass all the way from the front of the car. For a BB gun to knock glass all the way through there, I doubt it,” he said.

The suspects were reportedly seen driving away in a car, reports 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon, but no description of them was available.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests have yet been made.
