For Fifth Time This Month, A NYC Teacher Is Arrested For Alleged Child Sex Abuse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The rash of teachers and Department of Education employees who have been arrested for alleged sexual abuse is continuing.

For the fifth time this month, a public school employee has been charged with a sex crime against a student.

The Queens district attorney said Brett Picou, 30, an art teacher at P.S. 52, sexually abused six fourth grade girls by hugging them, then sliding his hands down over their clothing and touching their buttocks.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports

The Wall Street Journal reports one of the alleged victims told Picou, “I’m a little girl, you’re not supposed to do that to me.”

Police said the alleged abuse happened on school grounds.

One child told the school principal about the alleged abuse a week ago, triggering the investigation.

The Department of Education said Picou has been suspended without pay since the student made the accusation on February 15.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said the DOE is cooperating with investigaors.

“It’s my responsibility to be available to the parents to deal with this issue and also remind them that we’re not going to tolerate and remind the people committing these acts that I don’t want you a part of the system,” Walcott said.

Picou joins Chukwuma Duru, Tyleek Brooks, Gregory Atkins and Wilbert Cortez. Duru is a substitute teacher. Brooks and Atkins worked as teacher’s aides. Cortez is a computer teacher.

The recent spate of arrests has prompted Walcott to announce new policy changes. Walcott also hosted a meeting with angry, concerned parents last week.

This alleged sex offender has now been arrested but is not yet convicted of anything. Nevertheless, his name has been spread all over the media, the newspapers, and the internet. His teacher career is over. In fact, his life is now over. Even if he gets out of this, he is considered a threat to society. If he goes to prison, he will probably be attacked there. When he gets out, he won’t be able to get a job. No one will want him. He will likely go on welfare. Whatever dreams he had are now gone. He will never become anything. He has also destroyed his family’s name and honor. He will have nothing to look forward too. No self-respecting girl will want to date and/or marry him. His life is over. Really. He should go to the Brooklyn Bridge and just jump off. Never to be heard from again. Better to do it now, then after going through a trial.

Ridiculous – have you have ever heard of a “leading question”? what a mess that idea would make!

i don’t wish to minimize what is happening to these children if what they say is true, however, as a teacher that has been lied on and am still suffering the consequences of that lie some 6 years later reserve the right to voice an opinion until all facts are in. I have found out first hand that when a child doesn’t like you for one reason or another they can and do tell lies. they also convince their friends to back them up so they can “get that teacher out of the school”. If these stories are not true then they stand to ruin a person’s life and once that is done it is hard to recover.

on the other hand if there is sufficient evidence against these teachers, and i mean more that just some child’s word then by all means they should be punished to the full extent of the law.

@Linda – do you have children? How would you feel is some strange man questioned your child about a situation that had traumatized them without you or the child’s father present? before you start sending out ridiculous ideas you should think about how you would feel it it were your child.

Where is the Teachers Union in this – all these commercials about how they care about our kids – if they cared they would be open to firing these animals on the spot – step up Mulgrew!!!

You don’t know if these allegations are true. Many are not. I don’t know this particular individual, but you should at least wait to see if the charges hold. If he has been falsely accused, how do you suppose his good name should be restored?

  6. PETE says:

The Board of Ed is full of pedophiles and sex offenders. Remember MAMBLA? That originated all in the Bd of Ed. It is very hard to catch these criminals as they stick together like glue, and a child that is molested and abused does either not dare to speak up, or is ignored by teaching staff or the parents. Molesters are mostly transferred to other schools where they are not known. This is a devil’s circle nobody yet was able to break!!

  7. Jerri says:

OK, I know, from personal experience unfortunately, that teachers DO molest children. But I also know, from personal experience, that kids like. So how many are lies and how many are truth?

  8. Linda says:

Hey Cuomo, send a cop to every school, going to every class asking if a student has been approached. Have the students write their name on a piece of paper, if abuse has occurred and the name of the teacher, aide, etc. Have the student fold the piece of paper up, put it in a box for the cop to collect. Get this over with all at once. One cop per school could get this done very quickly.

good idea that way we can get the problem solved.

    2. Michael says:

Are you insane! That’s an awesome idea if you want to traumatize children. Why not call in the Gestapo?
