It's because of the unusually mild winter we're having.

"Oh goodness, yes! Especially this year! We've got things blooming all over the grounds. The Ladies' Border is very convenient to the conservatory and it's beautiful right now. The Perennial Garden is coming alive," said Kristin Schleiter, acting director of outdoor gardens.

On one plant aptly named Spring's Promise, pink flowers were attracting honey bees.

"We have daffodils blooming right now today in a number of spots around the garden and more and more coming all the time. The early crocuses are up and blooming," she said.

There is a downside. A cold snap could damage the fragile blossoms of some trees. Apple farmers upstate are particularly concerned.

The orchid show runs from March 3 to April 22. The New York Botanical Garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10458.
