A Sign Of Things To Come? Gas Prices Top $5 Per Gallon On Long Island

Gulf Station In Great Neck Gets Bold, While BP Down The Road Is $1 Less

GREAT NECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — It’s shocking — reports that gas will reach $5 per gallon by the summer.

Believe it or not, a station on Long Island is already charging that much. CBS 2’s Don Dahler went there Tuesday to find out why.

The sign at the Gulf station on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck really does say a gallon of regular will cost you $4.99.9. Unless you have a spare one-tenth of a penny lying around, for all intents and purposes, that’s a $5 gallon of gasoline — $5.09 if you use a credit card.

Click here to check gas prices near you.

The reaction? Well, you can probably guess.

“Wow! That’s crazy you know!” said Jose Godinez of Queens.

“[That’s] very expensive gas,” added Helene Flint of Jericho.

“$4.99, I think they’re crazy!” added Great Neck’s Michael Capuozzo.

Dahler went inside to try to get some explanation for the price, but the manager wasn’t in and the attendant could only say he was told to up the price on Monday.

Of course, gas station owners can charge whatever they want for their gasoline. It is a free market. But not even a block away, across the street, is a BP station where they’re selling gasoline for $3.95 a gallon. So the better question is why would anybody pay $5 a gallon?

Dahler asked the only gas customer he saw at the Gulf on Tuesday, Andre Jackson of Valley Stream.

Dahler: “I just wanted to know if you realize you’re paying a dollar more per gallon here than anywhere in the area?”

Jackson: “Yeah. Yes I do.”

Dahler: “Why would you choose this gas station when there’s one right up the street that has a dollar less a gallon?”

Jackson: “I didn’t know that. I’m not from the area, but I needed gas. Yeah, what can you do about it?”

Dahler: “Pay through the nose?”

Jackson: “Yeah, we’re paying through a lot more than that!”

Dahler did notice other customers stopping to buy things in the store, but no one else was filling up while he was there. Still, with gas prices everywhere on the rise, you have to wonder is this guy really crazy or is he simply ahead of his time?

And Dahler heard there’s another station in Oceanside selling gas for $5 a gallon, even though the national average is $3.72.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall On The Story

Also Tuesday, WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall met a man who has been using the iPhone app called Gas Buddy to find the best prices on regular gasoline.

Instead of grabbing his car keys, Frank Bridges told Hall he puts on his tennis shoes and walks, so he doesn’t have to use up the gas in his car.

He said the next car he buys will have better gas mileage.

What is the highest regular gas price you’ve seen? Please share it in the comments section below!

There’s a Mobil Station in Brentwood, Long Island, that made the morning news yesterday. Their lowest price was $4.99 for cash paying, self pumped, regular gas. If you wanted premium gas, pumped for you and were using a credit card, it will cost you $6.09. In Brentwood! I’d expect that in the Hamptons…not in Brentwood. Guess that’s a preview of things to come…

$5.00 / gallon gasoline is definitely a sign of things to come.

With the average price of a gallon of gasoline rising 40 cents just last week, Obama recently attacked Republicans, in an attempt to distract voters from his own failed energy policy.

‘The American people aren’t stupid,’ Obama said. ‘You know there are no quick fixes to this problem.’

Obama has been in office for three years now. There is plenty the federal government can do to lower gas prices in three years. The problem is, everything Obama has done on energy has been designed to increase Americans’ pain at the pump. … Yes, oil and gas production is up in the United States. But this is happening in spite of Obama, not because of him. It is being driven entirely by increased production on state and private lands, areas where Obama has little power to shut down production.

The reality is that Obama’s goal has always been higher gas prices. His Energy Secretary Steven Chu famously told The Wall Street Journal in 2008, ‘Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.’ And when Obama was asked by CNBC’s John Harwood that same year if high gas prices actually ‘helped’ the United States, Obama said, ‘I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment.’

Americans aren’t stupid. They remember Obama’s words. They know that the only real regret Obama has about high gas prices is that he may get blamed for them at the ballot box.

  4. Lex Terrae says:

Stories about increased gas prices would be a damn sight more informative if the reporters would disclose what part of the per gallon price is tax – state, federal, and local – and what part is for the product. It would also be very informative to know if taxes are indexed to price or if they are imposed per unit of consumption.

I would like to know how much of the increase in the cost of any product is due to market forces and how much is due to taxation. In my humble opinion, taxes for gasoline and many other commodities should be higher in areas of high urban density. New York, Boston, DC, Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Los Angeles place higher pressure on market forces from demand – demand driven by the need consumers have to live at distance from those city centers where they work or shop.

Tell the whole story and stop with the sensationalizing . . . please!

  5. Michael A. Pacer says:

Everyone is acting like $4 per gallon is a surprise. This is the first phase of a hyper-inflationary spiral. It’s not that the gas costs more …it’s that the money is worth so much less. Gas prices aren’t coming down, prices are correcting for inflation. You can lay this disaster directly on Pres. Obama and the former Democrat majority. You can’t add $4.6 Trillion in fiat money in 3 years and not see prices go up. They should measure inflation of the money supply by the price of gold and gasoline. Instead they measure inflation like they do unemployment….incorrectly.
Get used to paying more for everything and this is only the beginning.

I just realized that we have nothing to worry about, because it’s Bush’s fault! BHO says that your worries are over. We can blame Bush again tomorrow if things don’t improve.

    1. Bryan says:

And if that doens’t work, we can “strenuously object” to Bush! That will definitely work! Quit complaining!

  7. John Malverne says:

Why is President Obama making gas so expensive? He’s chasing the rigs out of the gulf and canceling pipelines. To make his “green” buddies rich? Why?

  8. BillCNC says:

To bad most of you guys have NO clue why the price of gas is so much.

To bad most of you guys have NO clue that the US is pumping more oil than we have since 2004.

To bad most of you guys have NO clue what the US’s largest export is RIGHT NOW!

If you did, … you wouldn’t be embarrassing yourselves so willingly by showing just how uninformed and misinformed you really are.

    1. Oil Trader says:

To bad they didn’t buy some energy positions in the market.
But maybe some 401K/pension fund managers did.

  16. Trader Joe says:

Wall Street is pushing to stop a new rule that would crack down on speculation in the energy markets, which many blame for contributing to the spike in gas prices.

The new rule — part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act to reform Wall Street — would set limits on how much traders can buy, preventing firms from grabbing large chunks of the energy market.

Nearly two years after the new law, the rule has yet to be fully implemented. But that didn’t stop two Wall Street trade groups from asking a federal court judge in Washington on Monday to delay or block the rule.

Representatives of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which filed suit against the rule in December, appeared at a hearing at which they sought an injunction barring the rule’s immediate implementation.

  17. Pete Bucky says:

CBS is unbelievable! One station gouges and your headline indicates that everyone on the Island is charging the same. Sensationlists!

    1. BillCNC says:

Just like some have about $6.00 a gallon in Florida, … They conveniently left out that it was a RENTAL agency that was charging $6.00 a gallon, … BECAUSE YOU BROUGHT THE ITEM BACK WITHOUT REFUELING IT, … WHICH IS NORMAL!

  18. John says:

I live here, it’s pure price gouging and there’s no one to stop them. Most stations are still $3.89 to $3.92, but the stations off the LIE and most Mobil stations are already charging $4.99, just like they do every other time gas prices are in the news.

This island is the world’s biggest strip mall, you can drive past the $4.99 stations and there will be a cheaper one 100 yards down the road.

    1. John Malverne says:

      >>> it’s pure price gouging and there’s no one to stop them

Uh, you can stop them by just not buying it.

Why is it that when gas goes up, everyone thinks that the producers and the speculators and George Bush can control the price at whim? But when gas went down to $1.89 back in 2009, suddenly these claims disappeared?

  19. MadCharles says:

  20. Harry says:

Higher gas prices is what BO stumped for when he campaigned. He said our gas prices should be inline with Europe. You can can than Obaama for that…..

  21. Titainiumman says:

When bush was president evrytime gas went up two cents it was front page news,Gas is nearing five bucks a gallon the the main stream media is doing everything it can to downplay Obama’s role in it,.
Don’t you just love media bias?

  22. Titainiumman says:

With higher gas prices i doubt that our muslim marxist ruler will gain re-election,For every raise in gas prices,Obama’s poll numbers will decline.
The higher prices will result in the domino effect producing higher grocery bills, nothing is immune from it.

  23. Satch says:

LG, so paying over $4.00 dollars for gas with Obama in charge is just fine with you. Will it be ok with you when it hits $5.00 also?

    1. LTG says:

or up to $10.00? Convinced yet? VOTE!!!!

  24. Satch says:

Isn’t that also a part of the Country that supported Obama so much, along with the other areas of the Country that done the same thing who are now paying through the nose for his failed Energy policies? Well you got what you wished for,——-quit you bitchin, and live with it.

  25. A former NYer says:

You get what you deserve!! Long Island voted heavily in favor of Obama and he hasn’t done a damn thing for you or the rest of the country that is not hooked on entitlements from the government. Keep voting for him and $5 buck a gallon will seem cheap by the time he is done with you and his second term!!

    1. LTG says:

      That’s right. Convinced Yet? VOTE!!!!
