Police: Retired Jersey City Cop Possibly Strangled At Home

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A retired Jersey City police officer was found dead in his home on Thursday.

Frank Goggin, who was on the force more than 30 years, was discovered face-down on the living room floor at his home on Seaview Avenue. Police said trauma to the 68-year-old's neck and face show he was strangled.

"It's very frightening because we both live in the same area," said neighbor Nancy Burke.

"He really didn't have much, not much to rob. I don't know. It's a mystery," Charles DePoalo added.

Investigators spent hours looking for clues inside the home and talking to neighbors, one at a time, door to door.

Barbara Burgess told CBS 2's Derricke Dennis she was interviewed for half an hour.

"Did I see anything? Did I hear anything? No, I didn't hear or see anything," she recounted.

Goggin's body was found after a concerned resident said he hadn't seen the normally active man since Monday.

"If he got strangled, they got him off guard, because Frankie was pretty sharp," DePoalosaid.

"We see each other constantly. Not to see him is kind of strange," Burke added.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is handling this case as a homicide, but has not ruled out robbery as a factor.

Goggin lived alone and had no children. An autopsy will determine his  exact cause of death.
