Cardinal Dolan Speaks Out Against Birth Control Policy To Crowd In Hicksville

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Cardinal Timothy Dolan is speaking out once again about the controversy involving contraceptive coverage in health insurance plans and the Catholic church.

Dolan addressed a crowd of over 500 people for about 45 minutes Saturday at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville. His talk was about a host of topics, and he vowed to keep fighting a new law that requires employers to cover the cost of contraceptives even when it’s against their religious beliefs.

“We are not trying to impose our teachings on anybody,” he said. “We are simply saying don’t impose your teaching upon us and make us do as a church what we find unconscionable to do.”

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Monica Miller reports

“We’re talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented radical intrusion into the interior life of integrity of a church’s ability to teach, service and sanctify it’s own,” he said.

Cardinal Dolan said the Health and Human Services regulation on providing free contraceptive services to employees of religiously based institutions is a violation of religious freedom.

On Thursday, the Senate narrowly defeated a move to overturn the policy in a close, 51-48 vote.

“The closeness of the vote shows how high the stakes are for women this year,” Sen. Charles Schumer said.

Joann Smith of Planned Parenthood said the law must be upheld to protect women’s health.

“I believe this is not a religious issue. It’s not about religion. It’s about access to contraceptive coverage,” she said. “For women who can’t afford access to contraception, it is a huge issue.”

“‘We’re talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented radical intrusion into the interior life of integrity of a church’s ability to teach, service and sanctify it’s own,’ he said.” Didn’t he say that, as well, when he opposed extending the statute of limitations on charging paedophile priests?

The catholic version of birth control is to have sex with young boys

Good job by the White House occupier. 70 million US Catholics will snub him 247 days from today and Obamacare will be no more!

    Good riddance!

There seems to be someone out there posing as me.. as an Athiest!!… I am a proud God fearing Christian.. Please forgive this person….. God is love!!

    • Rodin

“I studied every page of this book, and I didn’t find enough love to fill a salt shaker. God is not love in the Bible; God is vengeance, from Alpha to Omega.”

      • Rodin

“Not only is this not love; I think it is the most diabolical unfairness that was ever taught or devised.”

        • Steve Bender

And, what does this have to do with bith control??

          • Rodin

Can’t follow the thread? It’s a response to the faux “Rodin” claiming to be maligned at top, the impostor who gets his jollies off of those he confuses: “GØd is love.” Nothing to do with birth control at all.

  • Barbara Mitera

Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Sound familiar? The Catholic Church is in no position to condemn the President and his administration. The President’s legislation is merely giving the women the right to choose; we should have the right to make our own choices and not have some members of the clergy (specifically men) or men wearing suits and ties dictate to the women of this country what to do with their body.

    • CL

You people wouldn’t recognize the Constitution of the United States if it smacked you upside the head.

You like what’s going on? Wait until some loopy over-the-top arch-moralist occupies the White House and uses Obama’s precedent to take condoms behind the counter and require a prescription for them.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Wait until this power-grab steps on your little socialist toes. Then we’ll see what tune you’re singing.

This is about the government FAR OVERSTEPPING ITS CONSTITUTIONAL BOUNDARIES. Obama chose to pick a fight with the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church, instead of rolling over and playing dead, is fighting back.

Someday, if you ever get your feminist head out of the sand, you’ll realize that.

And I’m not a member of the clergy or a man wearing a suit. I’m a woman, and proud of it.

You people are driving me nuts.

      • Vince

Oh please and what do you think is going to take place should the two main GOP kooks Newt or Santoriam takes over the oval office?
Lastly stop labeling everyone who disagrees with you as a Socialist

Shouldn’t you be busy digging holes and hoarding supplies?

    • Steve Bender

Don’t you find it the least bit contradictory that you would have the right to choose but that President’s legislation on health care denies our right to choose to opt out of it? The clergy doesn’t have power over whether you use birth control or not. They are simply making moral statements that you can choose to follow or not. On the other hand, the President’s legislation throws my body in jail if I disagree to follow. So, tell me…who is dictating.

      • Vince

Oh I see they’re going to jail people for not taking Obama care?
That’s a new one on me

Through three dioceses, Milwaukee, St. Louis and NY, this hypocrite in a red dress who foams about “wars on religion,” abortion, contraception, gay marriage, women priests, all sex outside the limited confines of his ideology over 20 years has served nothing but denial platitudes about the sexual abuse scandal in his Catholic Church, was “challenged and haunted by the sexual abuse scandal” in that diocese and rolled back on his admission of child abuse by clergy in his former parish of Bridgeport.

As was once said of yet another “prince of the Church,” John Joseph Cardinal O’Connor, a bigot in a dress!

  • Anne

Bunch of freakin religious bigots expressing there opinions here (OOOPS did I say OPINION I meant HATRED. .

    • Steve Bender

When you can’t make an argument…call them bigots. Works every time.

    • Bonnie

No one is forcing you to be Catholic. So why is Obama forcing the Catholic church to do something that is and has ALWAYS been unconscionable to them? Don’t work for a Catnolic organization and you can get all the free contraception you want.

  • 2gruesome2b

president reagan said it best, “it seems to me that everyone who is for abortion has already been born”. i suspect that all you people who are so rabidly in favor of the practice secretly wish your mother had gotten rid of you.

    • Rodin

It’s better said that those who care most for the unborn care least once they’re born.

      • Steve Bender

Why is it better said? Those who care less about the unborn care more once they are?

  • MichaelGKoehler

I would recommend this health insurance plan i found through “Penny Health” to anyone with a growing family who is looking to minimize their medical expenses.

    • Alan

You like the plan so much you and your PALS pay for it, you SMUCK!!

Timothy Dalton said that? Oh you mean Timothy Dolan?

The First Amendment prohibits the federal government from making a law “respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”
This merely states that the Federal Government can’t start a religion ie….The National Church of thte United States. And it says that the Federal Government cant stop you from exercising your religious beliefs.
This is often interpreted as “Freedom of Religion”. If your religion, or variation thereof, ( I am not sure how many there are) does not agree with birth control, fine. Don’t practice it. My lonely quest is to have some day, “Freedom from Religion. Not gonna happen even though meanwhile we have to listen to St. Peter and the Pedophiles trying to tell us how to live.

    • Rodin

Free from religion, good without gØds!

    • Steve Bender

William, you had me until the comment…St. Peter and the Pedophiles. There are some really good Priest giving there lives for what they believe is true. And, you probably well know that 99 percent of Priest are NOT pedophiles. Still, you chose to stigmatize. Nay, your quest is not ‘freedom from religion’ but freedom from truth.

These “faith-based institutions” are businesses – NOT churches….BIG businesses. The government is trying to protect the freedom of their employees, not to limit it! Seriously: The bottom line is that absolutely NO ONE is coming into our Churches or places of worship and telling believers what to believe…..or forcing them to use contraception. BUT If the Bishops (and other denominations) want to continue running businesses outside of their places of worship…businesses that employ millions of people of varying faiths -or no “faith” at all- THEN they must play by the same rules and rights that other workers live by and enjoy (especially if their businesses use our tax dollars, and skip paying taxes, in the process). If the Jehovah’s Witnesses church hires me, can they alter my health insurance to exclude blood transfusions? Even worse- what if they operated a hospital by their “rules”? This is not a “war on religion”. Never was. However, it IS a war BY some religions… on women and men who simply want to plan their families, to control their futures, to keep their jobs, and to have health insurance that allows them to do that. if the Cardinal wishes to be a politician instead of a preacher, and wishes to use his pulpit for that purpose, rather than a place of worship, then he should give up his tax exemption.

    • Vince

Got another one for you gang here in Brooklyn and I’m sure other places if the Orthodox Jews in your area find out your business is owned by a Jew, doesn’t matter if you’re Reform, or conservative or whatever they will tell you to close down at Friday sundown and all day Saturday otherwise they’ll ban your business. My old photo lab used to go along till he moved elsewhere.

    • Iconoclast

Actually, you have a remedy in your highly selective hypothetical. Do not work for the Jehovah’s witnesses. Do not seek treatment from their hospitals.

    • Rodin

Tax all religious institutions. Give them something to really cry about. Let them celebrate April 15th with the rest of us instead of Easter, Passover, et al.

      • xxxxxxx

        Up yours Rodin…..

        • Vince

AND why would you have a problem with the churches paying taxes?

They more so the Catholics have lots of money

  • yorkvilleresident

Sorry, your eminence you are wrong. If the Catholic church does not believe in abortion or birth control, so be it for catholics only. If members of other religions have these beliefs then they should be able to get birth control through their medical insurance. The church should keep quiet about this, due to the many sex abuse scandals.

    • Iconoclast

If you do not want to abide by the rules of the Catholic Church, then seek employment elsewhere. Granted, that probably doesn’t jibe with the entitlement culture.

Seems to me like this debate has already played out 2000 years ago. I am certain that the Cardinal has read the words in Galatians chapter 2 in Acts Chapters 11 and 15 , what are we supposed to conclude other than one set of laws for men and another for women? He says we should become More political!? Is that code for be more conservative? I am Irish, to me an Irishman voting for a conservative is like a chicken voting for KFC’s Colonel Sanders.

  • WhatAboutBob7

Separation of Church and State! So State you have NO authority to Dictate Church policy birth control or other wise, period! It’s against Constitutional Law! You know, Obama Administration the law you constantly dishonor & break!

  • ManhattanGuy

Time to audit and tax all churches . They are not running hospitals, schools as they once did. They close them when they dont turn a profit. In addition, churches spend millions to promote their political agendas through lobbyists. This is not helping the poor.

    • DD

Most churches (all of the ones I have attended) give to the poor and needy in their communities. Food pantries, help with utility bills, mortgage payments, dinners for the homeless, etc. I think if you will research the subject, you will uncover a multitude of money that churches and their members give to helping those in need. So many here seem to resent the tax exempt status of churches without realizing what they give.

  • Realistic

Lots of Catholic bashers here for sure.

The widespread abortions and negative birth rates have/or will enable Muslims in Europe to overtake Christians & Jews there……real smart…….and you schmucks want the same here. Realllll bright!

    • ManhattanGuy

Catholic Church attacks and then cries bashing. They have attacked gays, women and cry when we hit back.

      • DD

How has the church attacked gays and women?

    • Vince

Yeah right get back on your pills

    • Rodin

How’d the Muslims get into this? Their infant mortality rate is higher and they can’t possibly overtake Orthodox Jewry.

      • Vince

Oh yeah they got a whole system in place arranged marriages via Match Makers, low divorce rate.
But are they ALL happy? I doubt it.

i.e. Check out the film Fiddle on the Roof

        • Rodin

My point is that there is no difference between Orthodox Jews and Islamists or. rather, ultra-Orthodox and the Taliban. And the Christian right follows suit.

When I was a young man, I was a big fan of musicals. The only musical I ever walked out of was “Fiddler on the Roof.” LOL!

True they are a odd bunch but the show has some very fine songs and a story that can apply to any race, faith, or no faith as its about family

  • Fairness

Lots of Catholic badgers out there..

As we can see in Europe, the same mentality’s: widespread abortions, negative growth rates, etc…have allowed the Muslims to overtake….and will be a majority at some point. Guess you all want the same in the US…….real smart.

  • John Rodriguez

Dolan looks like a pedophile! Instead of rallying against birth control the Catholic Church should be cleaning up the scandals with the pedophile priest that still plague them. Instead, they continue to sweep this under the rug.

    • Iconoclast

      That’s actually not correct.

  • robbie

p s old church priest dudes and annoited pederast priests should not be dictating womens health policy, women should be in control of their own health care decisions as just as much as men should be involved in their own, families in charge of their own, the church should not be dictating health care policy

  • robbie

there are so many ways to look at this and all point to the catholic church is backwards on birth control, the over population and famine in countries that ban birth control and are predominently religous should be evidence enough

  • Ready, Set CRAP!

    • Iconoclast

No, the government needs to stay out of our Church.

  • henryfinkelstein

Contraceptives prevent abortions and unwanted babies. This is what responsible adults including married couples who can’t afford children

  • Junior

Man has never had any idea what any God would want for us as human beings. Since it is written we have the right to choose. It has always been man’s personal convictions, regardless if it’s to control the populous or to remain in religious or economic power. If those who claim they are religious and follow the rulings of Jesus or a God, they must also believe in karma. Sinse it’s said your thoughts and actions will determine the seriousness of your consequences. . .

This is not just about birth control, but about murder-yes that is what abortion is!
No employer should be forced tp go against their moral beliefs.

      • Iconoclast

This is an empty argument. Under the 1st amendment, no one can be forced to worship a Catholic church. Under the 13th (?) amendment, no one can be forced to work for a Catholic school, hospital or other institution. This is just another example of libs wanting to be able to do whatever/whenever they want and have somebody else pay for it. Whatever happened to their live and let live policy of the 60s?
