NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Nassau County police say that a 23-year-old substitute teacher carried on a sexual relationship with one of her female students for several months.

Police say Kaitlin Grant of Elmont worked as a substitute science and math teacher in the Freeport School District. Cops say they were notified after the victim’s family learned of the relationship from social media postings.

The relationship allegedly took place from November 2011 to March 2012. Now, Grant is charged with criminal sexual acts and endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on $10,000 bail late Friday afternoon.

“She just a nice lady, nice substitute teacher for Earth Science, geometry, or whatever class,” sophomore Randy Melendez told CBS 2′s Derricke Dennis.

“She was a really good teacher. I wouldn’t expect anything like that,” said Malik Stoute.

Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Superintendant of Freeport Public Schools, released a statement on the matter.

“Ms. Grant had no prior criminal record and passed all background checks in compliance with New York State law. Ms. Grant will no longer work in the District,” Kuncham said. “The District is disturbed by these allegations.”

1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reported Grant is the daughter of Maurice Grant, an assistant principal at the Freeport High School, where she worked as a substitute teacher.

“They met while in school they and started interacting while in school,” Nassau County Police Sgt. Carlo Maltempi told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.

Maltempi said the relationship was discovered after a posting on a social media site.

“At this time there are no other victims. We’re are asking parents that if they believe their child may have been victimized, please call Crime Stoppers,” he said.

“I’m glad that it’s not my child, but I do feel for the family that’s going through, because no one would want that to happen to their child,” said parent Erica Thompson.

Kaitlin Grant’s Facebook page seems to describe a somewhat intense, tumultuous relationship during the time in question. It’s not clear if the below posts are in fact about the relationship, but they tell a story during the time in question.

On Nov. 25, Grant posted “I think I found my new love!!!!”

“Not going to say that I’m really surprised. You see a lot of things around the world. You see a lot of grown with young girls also,” said sophomore Giovanni Labrada.

Just a day later, Grant posted “And this is where the trouble starts….oh wat to do wat to do!!!!!!”

At 2:52 a.m. on. Nov. 29, Grant posted “I’m done with the BS…. Just stop lying to me, and stop lying to yourself!!!!” At 4:45 a.m., Grant posted “Discussion on hold, I’m tired we shall reconvene at a more appropriate time…. In the mean time i’ll take my own advice….and ‘STOP LYING TO MYSELF’…SMH!!!!”

SMH is an abbrevation for “shaking my head.”

On Jan. 1, Grant posted “Happy new year….I love my family, friends and most important my baby!!!!” When her friends asked who her baby was, Grant replied “I’m never telling!!!”

On Jan. 22, Grant posted “I’m missing someone very much.”

On Feb. 10, Grant posted “Blindsided!!!” later adding “It’s cool, that’s what happens with the game of love…sometimes you get burned.”

Grant’s attorney says his client “emphatically denies the allegations.”
