AAA Mid-Atlantic: Average Price Of Gas Continues To Rise In New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Motorists continue to see higher prices at the pumps in New Jersey.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of regular gasoline in New Jersey on Friday was $3.62, up a penny from last week. That's also much higher than it was a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.38.

And with the price of gas continuing to climb, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez proposed a plan on Friday to push prices down.

For the first time since 1949, says Menendez, the United States is actually exporting more oil products than it imports.

"That includes 73 million gallons of diesel and gasoline that we export for vehicles abroad every day," Menendez said.

In an effort to quell this ever-threatening issue, Menendez has introduced a bill requiring that all oil drilled from federal lands, waters and its refined products -- such as gasoline, diesel and heating oil -- be kept in the United States.

"If we drill it in America, we should keep it in America," Menendez said.

The price boost marks the fourteenth straight week that gas prices have risen in New Jersey.
