Ruth Madoff Settles Down In Greenwich To Be Closer To Family

GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- The secret is out tonight -- Ruth Madoff has a new address.

The wife of one of the most hated New Yorkers is back in the Tri-State Area.

Madoff, the wife of disgraced Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff, has moved close to her former home settling down in Connecticut to be closer to her son and grandchildren.

Back in October, Madoff appeared on CBS' 60 Minutes and responded to a question about whether she felt shame for all that has transpired regarding her husband.

"Of course I feel the shame...I can barely walk down the street without worrying about people recognizing me," she said.

Madoff has now moved to the modest home in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. CBS 2 attempted to speak with Madoff, but on such a beautiful day, all the blinds were drawn. But some neighbors were willing to talk.

"It was a bit weird. We didn't know if she was here or not. There were rumors," said neighbor Veronica Calderon.

Those rumors that were later confirmed and the community came to know that Ruth Madoff, the wife of the man serving 150 years in prison for orchestrating the greatest financial fraud in history, lives in the house on the corner.

"On Halloween, I saw her bring some little envelopes for the kids," Calderon said.

Some critics argue Bernie Madoff's victims lost everything and that they will never recover, saying that Ruth gets to recover in towns like Boca Raton and Greenwich -- two of the wealthiest communities in the country.

However, Madoff says the last four years have been very difficult and a healing process.

"I would just like to know where she the got money and how she's going to afford to maintain the lifestyle," said Marie Schembri, of East Chester.

Ruth Madoff was forced to forfeit over $80 million in assets. The Greenwich home where she lives has been in her family for years. As for family, her son, Andrew, is still alive. Her son, Mark, committed suicide in 2010.

She has also recently stated "I know that people are understandably furious with Bernie, but I am not without friends, old and new, and I've got my family."

Madoff also claims to have not spoken to Bernie in over 6 months.
