Police say they responded to a 911 call at a home on Loret Lane in East Northport just before 9 a.m. Monday and found 31-year-old James Schultz dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Cops say Schultz had picked up his 13-month-old son from his ex-girlfriend's house earlier that morning and found the toddler inside the home.

When they tried to contact the boy's mother, 23-year-old Katherine Farrell, they found out she hadn't shown up for work that day.

Investigators say when detectives went to Farrell's home in St. James, they found her stabbed to death. Detectives think Schultz stabbed her when he went to pick up his son.

Police notified Child Protective Services. The investigation is still ongoing.
