Coughlin, Giants Find ‘Perfect Match’ In Tight End Martellus Bennett

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — The Super Bowl champions have found their tight end.

The Giants signed free agent Martellus Bennett to a one-year, $2.5 million deal Wednesday.

Bennett spent the past four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as the backup to Jason Witten, catching 85 passes for 846 yards and four touchdowns.

“He’s ready to go to work and wants to prove he can be one of the top tight ends in the NFL,” Reese said. “We think the sky is the limit for him here.”

The Giants were in need of a tight end after starter Jake Ballard and backup Travis Beckum suffered major knee injuries in the Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots

“In our situation it’s a perfect match, because here we are with two guys that aren’t going to be able to go,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “We get a guy with this quality and we can say to him, `You go out on the field, you go from less than 30 percent play time to 70-75-80 percent play time just by virtue of if you come here and if you are willing to pay the price to be what you want to be. Here’s the opportunity.'”

A second-round draft choice from Texas A&M in 2008, Bennett also is an excellent blocker. The Giants’ running game struggled most of last season and it is going to be a question mark next season after the team’s decision to release veteran Brandon Jacobs.

“In Dallas, my main role was to block, run block,” Bennett said. “I think I was a big part of the run offense that we had out there. I actually enjoy blocking, honestly. The thing I like about coming here, the situation here is that I don’t only have to block. I get a chance to do more things.

“Last year, I only had 23 targets with the Cowboys and I played a whole lot of snaps. I think this year I’ll get a chance to show both ends of the spectrum. I don’t like to be labeled. I don’t want to be labeled as a pass-catching tight end or a blocking tight end. I just want to be a tight end.”

Great move, or were you holding out hope for the return of Kevin Boss? Sound off below…

This is a great move we all know that Eli loves his tight ends and he has made kevin boss and Jake Ballard look very good. I think Bennett can catch 60+ passes for 700+ yards and 5-10 TDs. Giants need only 1 more receiver and Eli will put up numbers that exceed what he did this year!!!!

this is a great move by “big blue”! this guy is a stud. I was only disappointed they only signed him for one year?

  3. Jd V. says:

Wow! With Bennett’s signing, this could very well mean we might go the OL way in the 1st round depending on who’s still in the board. I was really hoping we get to draft this dude Colby Fleener but, that goes out the door now.
Regarding the OL prospects, Riley Reiff’s stock went down as well as Peter Konz. Both did bad at the combne w/ their bench presses. They both stunk up the joint. W/ that said, IDK who’s gonna up there @32. JR might trade that pick to get more picks…Who knows?

    1. Jd V. says:

Although, I’m pretty sure they would still draft a TE possibly in the later rounds but, no question, we def have to draft at least 2 OL to help out Eli & our anemic running game, lol!
Unquestionably, we need fresh & young blood at this position … you all know.

  5. Adam Torres says:

Excellent move this guy is young has great size and hopefully he takes advantage of being with coach Pope. Also cant forget he will want to stick it to the Cowboys great move all around.

    Great Move !!!

  7. jcap says:

there is a reason why he was limited to blocking duty. he was a lousy receiver.

    1. ron johnson says:

Ever hear of Jason Whitten? Could be a reason he was not targeted in the passing game????

  8. PinStriperJim says:

Giants rock!! Hopefully our little brothers of football (Jets) are taking notes.

  9. Phillip F says:

Great pick up. Jerry Reese is a genius. I very excite!

  10. Tommy C says:

Another STEAL by Jerry Reese….Great job Jerry. This kid will flourish in our offense, 6″6 265 whats not to like …………70+ catches 800+ yds guarantted.

    1. Trotter76 says:

Absolutely Tommy, that’s a great estimate. Probably won’t be up there with Gronk and Graham in this offense but could easily be a 2nd tier TE. Just has to keep his concentration and not drop easy passes.
