Police: 2 Pedestrians Killed In Clifton Hit-And-Run

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities are hunting for a hit-and-run driver who they say killed two pedestrians as they attempted to cross a highway in northern New Jersey.

The accident occurred just before 4 a.m. Saturday on Route 46 in Clifton.

The victims were identified only as a 29-year-old Passaic woman and a 36-year-old Brooklyn man. Details on their injuries were not immediately disclosed and both were pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the crash occurred.

Authorities were trying to determine why the two were in the area and where they may have been headed when they were struck. A witness saw the accident, but could provide little detail on the car, which quickly fled the scene.

No other injuries were reported in the accident.

They should raise the penalty for hit-and-run accidents to a mandatory 10 year sentence and 25 if someone dies.
