Bloomberg Strikes Again: NYC Bans Food Donations To The Homeless

Has The Mayor Totally Eaten Away At The Public's Desire To Do Good?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.

Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless.

Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

“My father lived to 97; my grandfather lived to 97, and they all enjoyed it and somehow we’re being told that this is no good and I think there is a degree of management that becomes micromanagement and when you cross that line simply what you’re doing is wrong,” Richter said.

But Mayor Bloomberg, a salt-aholic himself, was unapologetic.

“For the things that we run because of all sorts of safety reasons, we just have a policy it is my understanding of not taking donations,” Bloomberg said.

Told that his administration recently enacted the policy, the mayor was Grinch-like.

“If they did in the past they shouldn’t have done it and we shouldn’t have accepted it,” Bloomberg said.

Richter said that over the years he’s delivered more than two tons of food to the homeless. He said Mayor Bloomberg is eating away at his ability to do good.

The ban on food donations was made by an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of Health and Homeless Services.

    This is just infuriating.

  2. tcardello says:

The health issue seems like a smoke screen. I think the mayor would like to see homeless people leave the city.

  3. Jerry6 says:

He would rather they starve to death rather than MAYBE get too much salt, fat, or fiber. And here I thoght he was more intelligent than most polaticions.

  4. sg says:

fine if he wants to do it let him and then let the city council of new york PAY FOR THE FOOD TO FEED THE MISFORTUNATE you just watch and see how fast they are crying for those donations

  5. his political affiliation aside, this is asinine. These people are HUNGRY. FEED THEM. This bears repeating. THIS IS ASININE. FEED THESE HUNGRY PEOPLE and keep the food out of landfills. You have got to be kidding me. Who is pushing this? Whose agenda? Food manufacturers? Restaurants?

  6. Dan says:

I simply do not believe most of the comments. Do you really think a homeless person who got free food for years gives a hoot whether Bloomberg is an independent, democrat or republican? I think not!!!! He wants food which he is now not getting anymore, because Bloomberg is more interested in the fibre content then in the homeless being fed. If this wasn’t so sad, he would be funny.

  7. Veronica Smith says:

Bloomberg is a poor excuse for a human being.

  8. eugene says:

all the homeless should get together and go rob his rich ass..attack his food supply everyday!…this is sick and wrong..welcome to America people….rich get richer to make sure the poor stay poor.

  9. Michael says:

Bloomberg is the poster boy for the nanny state . Billionaire Boy is one arrogant , pompous , self-absorbed egotist. He’s one of the most annoying politicians in America which is saying quite a bit. You really have to low self-esteem and a poor self-image to vote for that whiney dude. But you did didn’t you.

  10. Peter says:

In the words of Michael Marie Antoinette Bloomberg,”Let them eat cake,as long as it doesn’t contain salt, sugar or trans fats”.

  11. SerfCityHereWeCome says:

Ah, the left-wing elitist “Let ’em eat caca” mantra strikes again. I guess it’s more “compassionate” in their warped worldview to retroactively abort people through starvation than to risk increasing their blood pressure by 5 points.

  12. get real says:

From what it sounds, the stew was homemade, his cats were probably swimming in it. Sounds like city is looking out for them. Better than it was with koch with rows of boxes throughout midtown.

  13. Tracey Harrell says:

A born again Christian I work with asked me NOT to bring in a dinner for a hungry co-worker because I was “enabling” him. He is 19 and got his girlfriend pregnant and is working 2 jobs. But my good CHRISTIAN friend says “NO FOOD FOR THE NEEDY’. Think about that. WWJD???????????????????

  14. Jared Marr says:

This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. This is a prime example of these semi-idealistic elitist whack jobs taking these “good” concepts and applying them in ridiculous and non-pragmatic ways. The government needs to stay the hell out of our lives and definitely out of what we decide to feed the homeless. It’s not like they are being poisoned and the idea of an overweight homeless person after the weeks I’ve spent among them through Occupy and Food Not Bombs seems absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know what he is trying to accomplish. In my mind this seems more like a clever ploy to eliminate the homeless by drastically reducing their available food supply. I think most people would rather have a little excess fiber, fat, or salt, and be alive than die from starvation. I would love to see one person actually logically explain to me why this rule is needed.

  15. Chrissygnj says:

This is political correctness gone amok to the detriment of the people who need it…FREE FOOD!
We throw away more food than can be consumed – and yet, when attempting to feed the hungry…the donors are now stopped by misguided rules.
Let the people eat!! Let the food continue to be donated…This is absolutely ridiculous and mean!
    And stupid…and very very sad

  16. Robin says:

I guess what they find in the garbage can is ok, then?

  17. Misty says:

What the heck is wrong with people. You want to starve the homeless? The men, Women CHILDREN and VETERANS that served this country. You want them to go hungry, why? Because you feel the need to control every aspect of everyone’s lives! These are human beings, they know if they cant have something, if they cant they wont eat it! Quit trying to dictate what everyone can do! Jesus said feed the people for whoever feeds the hungry in turn has fed him. Grow up and stop acting like two year olds that think they own everything!

  18. FUBloomie says:

Typical crazed liberal policies. Hey Bloomberg. How about you just get the hell out of our business?

  19. Jane says:

So Bloomberg would rather the homeless have no food than the “wrong” food?! Their hunger is now blood on his hands.

  20. Parasites says:

Meanwhile, the Jews and Russians have been on the entitlements rag for decades. Try getting a Section 8 apartment–no applications are being accepted–it’s been closed for a decade. We Americans have a right to Section 8 and all other HR benefits, not these foreigners. And now they’re having Anchor babies like it’s going out of style.

  21. Paul says:

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

“I don’t care whose son he is, ” said Mayor Bloomberg. “He won’t be doing that again.”

  22. Chavis says:

Memo: Find ways to ban charities from helping the homeless, so I can say government is necessary to help the homeless, and thereby justify demands for higher taxes and more bureaucratic controls.

Create a crisis and then find a way to slap a band-aid on it with taxpayer money. How to justify big government, 101.

  23. Mark Ross says:

Two words come to mind: How stupid!

  24. Tim says:

Can someone please send him away, to the Cayman Islands, perhaps?

    1. KGB says:

You mean St. Petersburg, don’t you?

  25. i will not follow says:

Why do We Continue to Allow These People To Dictate Our Lives?

  26. Inwood says:

Imagine receiving peanut butter sandwiches and having a child eat one and die because of undiagnosed allergies. Who gets sued? Not the donor, but the group that gave the sandwich to the kid. Who goes out of business? The feeding group. Who gets hurt? The people who need food.

So, if you are going to allow unrestricted donations of food to shelters and soup kitchens, those shelters and soup kitchens need to be indemnified against lawsuits if someone is sickened, injured, or killed as a result of eating unhealthy food.

  27. Diane Russom Harrison says:

  28. Nancy Jimenez says:

this man doesn’t care about the homeless people at all it seems! feo! shame on you mayor of n.y.c.! boo! everybody is different!

  29. vicki purtee says:

are you kidding me?? they are HOMELESS for Gods sake..they DON’T care!!! they need food!!!!!
