BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A West Islip man has been accused of impersonating a federal agent while trying to pull over a vehicle last month.

Police say a victim reported to authorities that on Feb. 29, someone driving a Jeep activated a red strobe light and tried to pull him over on Fifth Avenue and Brook Avenue in Bay Shore.

The victim told police the driver of the Jeep pulled up next to his car at a traffic light and told him he was a federal agent.

Police said the driver of the Jeep fled after the victim asked to see identification.

Following an investigation, police arrested 24-year-old Shaun Coppola and charged him with second-degree criminal impersonation.

Police are asking anyone may have encountered the suspect to call the Third Precinct at 631-854-8326 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
