Man Killed, Four Injured In Gerritsen Beach Construction Accident

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One worker was killed and four others injured while remodeling an old home in Brooklyn.

The construction job was an addition to an existing one-story structure in Gerritsen Beach. The project collapsed around 11 a.m. on Frank Court.

"There were five men working on the roofing project at this stage. We believe that three were carrying material or working on the roof at the time," said Robert LiMandri, Buildings Department Commissioner.

Authorities told CBS 2's John Slattery it appears the addition was not properly anchored or supported.

"The existing structure was an old bungalow. It appears the existing structure could not support the second story addition based on what we see so far, said LiMandri.

The work was being done by JD Construction of Brooklyn, and though the Buildings Department said permits were in order, there may have been illegal work done prior to 2004. Since then, the property has changed ownership.

"I heard a fellow got killed. That hurts. That hurts," said neighbor Jimmy McNease.
