Toomer: Time Running Out For Sanchez As Jets’ Starting QB

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Amani Toomer has moved on from his war of words with former Giants teammate Jeremy Shockey.

Next target: Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Toomer met reporters at the NFL’s new pop-up store on Monday. He pulled no punches about Gang Green’s budding quarterback controversy, ignited by the team’s acquisition of high-profile backup Tim Tebow.

“I don’t see Sanchez being the starter for the entire season,” Toomer said, according to the New York Daily News.

The former wide receiver insisted Sanchez, who regressed in his third year as a pro, is “not a great quarterback.”

“I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that,” Toomer said.

Toomer isn’t a recent convert to Tebowmania. He’s praised the ex-Broncos quarterback for performing under pressure — and intense scrutiny.

Tebow stunned New York last season when he led his former team to a last-minute win in Week 11.

“There’s something to be said about that,” said Toomer. “I think the Jets realized that when it happened to them in Denver.”

Do you think Toomer on the money or off the mark? Sound off in the comments below…

If we Jet fans could care less what Joe namath thinks, why would we care about a has been NY Giant like Amani Toomer and what he has 2 say in his unsolicited opinions on everything Jets?

Hank – ” I CAN’T WAIT!” For tebow to start. So I can watch rex get fired.

It’s tough to complete a pass when yer lyin’ on yer back.

  • Alex

Hank you must be kidding me. What on earth does Toomer know about Sanchez or his ability? Did you ever hear Sanchez making comments about anyboduy on the giants? Or who used to play with the Giants? You are a hater, plain and simple. Sanchez may in fact be pushed out and if it happens it will be a big mistake. Tebow is a useless component at this point because he can not run an NFL offense. It was a publicity stunt that will go bad.

What if Sanchex gets hurt? We then havbe a useless QB and nobody of any merit behind him.

build an offense around tim and he can out play anyone ask the jets

Sanchez hasn’t a prayer; drafting him and then getting Tebow now all appears to for show. Sanchez has yet to even have WR talent as good as Tebow had in Denver. It’s not like Ryan’s Defense has ever come up big when it had to, even for the Denver game. Maybe the Jets can trade for Fox and his Defense.

As a Giants fan, I’d say the grade on Sanchez is “to be determined”. It’s really hard to grade your quarterback when his offensive line was giving up sacks by the busshelful! We all saw the Raven game. Sanchez got hammered big time. Most human beings would be skittish if they got hit as much as Sanchez did.

Put a decent offensive line in front of him. Give him wide receivers who aren’t prima-donnas/malcontents and get him a back up running back, THEN see where he is.

Clearly, getting Tebow is the LAST thing they needed. I mean, imagine Sanchez is putting together a good drive and they’re now on the eight yard line. They take out Sanchez, Tebow runs for a TD and Sanchez has to congratulate him? Are you kidding me? If I were Sanchez, I’d demand they trade me.

What absolute garbage. Even last year, with Sanchez at his worst, he was better than Tebow. Let Tebow do what he does best, run the option. If the Jets need to replace their passer, they can draft one next year in the last guaranteed year of Sanchez’s contract.

  • Al

By keeping Sanchez as the starter the Jets are giving themselves an ‘out’ in case Tebow’s passing doesn’t improve. But if Tebow starts hitting his passes consistently Sanchez is toast.

  • Hank

100% dead on. Sanchez will be benched by Halloween.
Toomer was the of the few in the NY media who said the Giants would go on a run in the playoffs. He knows what he is talking about.
