Giants’ Victor Cruz: Holdout ‘Not Even In My Vocabulary’

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz came out of nowhere last season to become a household name. Now he wants to be paid like one.

But that doesn’t mean he’d consider stiff-arming his team with a training camp holdout.

“Not at all,” Cruz said from Nike’s NFL uniform gala in Brooklyn. “That’s not even in my vocabulary. I don’t even know what it means.”

Cruz, who earned a modest $405,000 in 2011, set a Giants franchise record with 1,536 receiving yards. He’s slated to make $540,000 in base salary next season.

The 25-year-old Super Bowl champion told in February that he deserves “to be paid more money at this point.” On Tuesday, Cruz insisted that he’s “not frustrated at all.”

“When I was young, it wasn’t about the money,” he said. “It wasn’t about the fame and fortune. It was just going out there and playing football. Regardless of how short-term this career can be, I just want to go out there and play.

“All of that stuff will take care of itself.”

Cruz said that if he remains positive, “good things will come.” They certainly have already for the undrafted fan favorite.

“You just gotta remain humble and remain yourself and understand that all the good things are going to come to you in time,” he said. “So you just have to keep doing what you’re doing”

Should Big Blue show Cruz the money? Sound off in the comments below…

    Lock him up LONG TERM!!!

What’s the sense of paying quarterbacks a $100 million if they don’t have Quality receivers to get to the ball and hold on to it. Victor could have been a star
2010-2011 if he’d been given the chance. He’s proven himself over and over in
2011-2012. Do the right thing and honor virtue.

He deserves to be paid for the work that he put in, remain humble young man it will come, stay true to yourself, and everything will work out, keep up the good work Big Blue for life!

The money will come victor, just like you said. Don’t make any waves. The Giants were there for you, now you be there for the Giants. Remember now one even drafted you, and the Giiants took a chance, and it paid off big time. You’ve been saying all the right things, and the money will follow.

  • MICK

Pay the man…….He deserves it. He wasn’t just good for one game. He was one of the main reasons the Giants went to the Super Bowl. He had a great season and deserves to be rewarded.

  • merry

pay him and treat him well…..prepare for dbl coverage – he’s that good and everyone knows it.

    • Steven K

one thing i love about this guy hes not steve smith and i mean selfish now where is steve smith lol he turned down like 6 yrs for 35 million for a 1 yr deal now with the rams for like 2 million lol

  • Tim

I’m a huge fan of Cruz and how he is carrying himself with the popularity and the money talk. I do believe that he should reciever a bigger salary for next season, but not top money. We are talking about a guy who almost got cut before the season started, one season is not deserve big money, if Cruz goes out there and continues his reign here in NY for at least one more year, then the money should resemble his play.

  • Bill

Given the fact that he is paid at what must be the absolute minimum it would be smart of the Giants to offer him a bonus if not a new contract.

  • BRM

Pay him…Victor produced when the season was on the line!

show my dude some love he deserves it he worked for it & I believe he will reward us with another championship

  • JIM 62

They need to show him some luv….

  • Jon P

In Jerry we trust. case closed.

  • 96harley

If he holds out, I will loose respect, Giants gave him a chance, he took advantage. He should be paid more, but one season doesn’t make you a star

  • John Borkowski

Thank you Victor for being the role model of WR we have been waiting for. It is a breath of fresh air to not have to hear about holdouts for money. Cruz is a model on and off the field!

  • CJ

Of course give him a new big contract. How much would you have to pay for his replacement?

  • Master Shake

He’s a football player. I doubt if there’s much of anything in his vocabulary.

  • JC

NO complaining, great attitude, hard worker, team first….no brainer! give him the money!

  • JWB

    Show him the money!
