Pit Bull Shot In The Head Trying To Protect Owner, But Miraculously Survives

'Kilo' Didn't Take Too Kindly To Gunman Pushing Into Staten Island Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s a dog that took a bullet, possibly saving his owner’s life. And surprisingly, the 12-year-old pit bull shot in the head survived.

The pit bull named “Kilo” was off to the vet Wednesday for a check-up, after taking a bullet for his owner, Justin Becker.

“He’s a hero. He saved my life. He went to protect me and he did his job,” Becker told CBS 2’s John Slattery.

Even Dr. Greg Panarello, the veterinarian who treated the dog, was impressed.

“Incredibly lucky. Incredibly lucky,” Panarello said.

It happened Saturday evening in Becker’s apartment house in the Graniteville section of Staten Island. A gunman, posing as a FedEx deliveryman, wearing a uniform, rang the bell and said he had a package, but then pushed his way into the apartment.

“He barged in. My first reaction after seeing the gun is push him out, so I pushed him to the door. Like I said, he fell like wedged right by the door. I slammed him inside the door and he was stuck and tried to get out now because he was getting crushed,” Becker said.

His girlfriend has been holding the dog and let go.

“I was shocked and I was terrified,” Nicole Percoco said.

The dog went after the gunman.

“Now Kilo came out to protect me. Grrr, he tried to come through the door at the guy, his head was out. Grrr, then I heard the guy, three gunshots,” Becker said.

One of the shots hit the dog in the head.

“It did ricochet off the skull and went straight down and exited at the neck,” Dr. Panarello said.

The vet staff put a superhero insignia on this bandage. Kilo was up and around Wednesday, going for walks just three days after being shot.

“I think it’s amazing. He saved my life,” Becker said.

You’ve heard of a cat with nine lives. Kilo seems well on his way.

ok, why would someone go out of his way to impersonate a fedex guy with a gun to begin with?

  3. Dr meh says:

Well nice story but did they catch the intruder.

    Typical bad article on CBS

    Do they have any editors?

  4. Norma says:

This story almost had me in tears. I have a blue nose pit bull and he’s the sweetest dog I have ever owned. I’m so so happy Kilo survived and is doing well. And I’m so so happy to see many pit bull lovers/owners here that agree pit bulls ARE NOT VICIOUS! Only the owners that make them that way.

  5. King Zohan says:

This drug dealing wanna be wigger needs to get his life together, he might survive longer.

  6. stacy says:

I am a pit bull owner and they are loyal loving dogs that have a bad rep because of dumb owners. Good boy kilo hope your boo boos get better soon.

  7. Josie says:

Kilo, youre a Hero no matter what! Thank goodness you survived the stupidity of humans.

  8. online shopping sites says:

Thank you, I’ve recently been searching for info about this topic for a while and yours is the best I’ve discovered till now. However, what about the conclusion? Are you certain about the supply?|What i don’t realize is in truth how you’re no longer really a lot more neatly-liked than you might be right now. You are very intelligent.

  9. urs says:

Been reading some of these comments I do give a damn about what his name ment the dog rocks and the owner must take great care and have built a great relationship with him so that he felt his owner was treatened and needed his help.what an awesome dog. I own a Razor pit first ever pit love this dog her name you ask? Isabella and she is so smart and fummy as hell with all her goofy antics and no Im not a twilight freak most times I call her balou….great dog!!

  10. Kay says:

    1. Basia says:

I hope you have had a vasectomy. The “Idiot” quotient is full.

      1. Norma says:

        Love it! Well said, Basia.

  12. john says:

This has to be the downright funniest bunch of posts I’ve ever seen. Dog people must be smarter!

  13. getrealwithsteve says:

I have been “schooled” by two Pitt Bulls. I had never been around this breed, except at a distance. My opinion was alays negative…….. That is until Bernie and Bentley came into my life. Bentley, a blue nose pitt, and Bernie a brendle. Two very aggressive and menacing looking and acting dogs. So, what happened? They stole my heart. I love these dogs. I am so happy that Kilo is alive and recovering.

  14. dannooo says:

I don’t like pit bulls. I was attacked by one while delivering mail. It was put down because if it. The owners of the dog should have never been able to have a dog. With that said if someone is robbing or stealing from someone they deserve what they get and I would not feel sorry if the dog killed the robber, or if the owners of the dog got the gun after the dog attacked him/her and shot him dead. Self defense is one thing, criminal intent is another. What is going to happen to the jerk that shot the dog?

    1. Basia says:

may you be reborm as a pit bull in your next life.Your reasoning is deeply flawed, but natural for a person living in fear.

  15. Kayla says:

This is amazing. It proves that pitbulls are wonderful dogs just like any other dog, and also that dogs really will risk their lives for their owners. I am glad the dog survived, and hope he has a long and joyful life.

  16. Jean2009 says:

Well, just because a dog is a pitbull doesn’t mean it will tear you apart. All dog breeds have the DNA in it to be potentially dangerous except maybe all those toy dog breeds. Although, they do have teeth. Get over it people. You have good dogs and bad dogs just like you have good people and bad people. That is just how life is. And for those who are commenting that the dog’s owner is a drug dealer or into drugs could have a suit filed by him for defamation of character. And yes, some people would jump at any opportunity to sue someone for money.

  17. Bob says:

More proof this breed should be outlawed, and destroyed on sight!

    1. Bob says:

How many children have to die before we do something about these monsters.

      1. UgotJUANupyouraz says:

Your stupidity amazes me. The only thing that should be destroyed on sight are ignorant fools like yourself. Any of the BullBreeds are smart, loyal, and obedient.

    2. UgotJUANupyouraz says:

I’m guessing Bob is a bit of a bitch. Probably scared of toy dogs, i bet the sight a pitbull makes him poop on himself. Poor Bob don’t be a hater cause most male dogs have bigger balls than you.

    3. Basia says:

Bob- You are clearly a cretin…The proof is that this is a wonderful dog.

      1. Jeff Benson says:

“Bob” also robs people when they are home alone.

  18. michelle fowler says:

WOW, looks like those strict gun laws are working for NY LOL, good thing that criminal didn’t have a gun..oh wait! he did, wonder how he got a gun when it’s against the law…hhhmmm,,,, good for the dog & the owner!

  19. TRE says:

Pits are great when they have respectful owners that love and train their dogs for companionship. It’s really the owners that can be terrible… and that applies to any type of dog.

I think the statistics with Pit Bulls is skewed because so many Delinquent or Criminal Types prefer Pit Bulls as feigned masculinity and status symbols. You’re hardly ever going to see a gang banger parade around a Golden Retriever because it doesn’t fit the rap music video image. Just the facts.

    Glad to read this story.

    1. Norma says:

Tre, this was too funny! LoL! But so true. 🙂

  20. neworleansann says:

Good boy! Kilo, you’re a keeper. Beautiful, loyal boy.

  21. Penny Beach says:

    Good boy, Kilo.

  22. mdt says:

one good act by one pit bull mutt does not give all pit bull mutts a good name. they are bred to fight although the breeds they were bred from are genuinely wonderful dogs the pit bull mutt were bred to attack and fight. this will never leave the mindset of the breed. and having a jaw that locks has proven to be dangerous as well. many dogs protect their owners not just the pit bull mutt breed. kudos to the dog and glad he lived but one good act can not count for all the pit bull mutts out there

    1. noway says:

there is no locking mechanism built into a Pit’s jaw

      1. UgotJUANupyouraz says:

Thank You noway. Finally someone with some intelligence posting here.

As for the poster that calls himself mdt, please provide some scientific evidence into this locking mechanism in PitBull jaws. Don’t worry I’ll wait

        1. Norma says:

I educated myself on pit bulls and bought a book so I would know how to train and socialize my dog and it clearly states that pit bulls DO NOT have the capability of locking their jaws. That’s a myth!!

    2. Basia says:

Sorry mdt, but you make a judgement on an animal. If the dog is bad it is due to the owner. This has been proven over and over again. The human is the fault.

Penalize the owner and not the dog.
BTW pit bull mutts are not BRED to “fight”: Only humans breed them to fight.

Lock jaw is a myth, but powerful pressure in the jaw does exist.

  23. RiverdaleBob says:

What about the gunman? He get away? Dog eat him? Cops looking him ? Where ‘s THE REST OF THE STORY? Glad the dog made it.

  24. Steve says:

Here I thought NY’s gun laws would make the “city” a bastion of peace and harmony! I bet the would be thief’s gun wasn’t registered? Where is the outrage and more gun laws from Mayor Bloomberg? I bet that animal control will soon be knocking on this guy’s door too! How dare he have a “pit-bill” and let it bite a human!! **”sarcasm alert”**

  25. nascarnut says:

Pits get a bad rep. If raised correctly they are loving family pets. Just like any other dog. Some people just want to label them without the facts.

  26. desert says:

Well..if you weren’t in communist nyork! You could have a weapon to defend yourself and the bullet hole would be in the a.h.’s head! where it belongs!

  27. joan says:

It is so rewarding to see so many positive comments about pits. I worked, briefly, at a kill shelter and you just knew these dogs were doomed. To really help save them I hope all owners and supporters make generous donations to groups and shelters that rescue and try to save these wonderful dogs. Maybe one day we’ll be able to outlaw dog fighting in all states!.

  28. megan says:

    YAY KILO!!! GOOD DOG!!!!!

proud mama of a pit and i wouldnt trade my baby boy for anything in this world!
been around pits for a long time and worked at a vets office for 2 years i had more problems with little dogs, poodles, labs, etc…. then i ever had with any pit ive ever come across they were always well behavied….more often then not its the owners fault their dog ends up the way they do. some dogs just go crazy it doesnt matter what the breed. Pits are also known as nanny dogs, people used to leave their kids at home with them to keep them safe when parents would leave the house. it wasnt until people started training them to be fighters and inbreeding the hell out of them that there was a problem with them. and the worst part of that if this story involved a different breed of dog everyone woould be saying good for the dog thats amazing….

    ❤ pit bull lover!!!!

  29. Cindy Miller says:

Kilo is a very good boy! I have an 8 yr. old Blue Pit, Smokey, and he’s the best dog I’ve ever had. He lives with a Rhodesian Ridgeback and sleeps with a Maine Coon cat. Very sociable, sweet, and well-trained–the smartest dog we’ve ever had. I’d definitely get another one some day.

    1. megan says:

agreed my 2 year old red pit Kujo has grown up with my border collie, with 2 pomaranins and goes to the dog park all the time, he is so smart, loving and the biggest baby in the world, he would rather lay in your lap and take a nap then evern think about hurting someone

  30. Alex says:

Pit Bulls (Kilo) protecting their drug dealers, yet another violation of our rights. The gov’t constantly violates our rights.
They violate the 1st Amendment by caging protesters and banning books like “America Deceived II”.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by allowing TSA to grope you.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars.
    Impeach Obama, support Ron Paul.
Last link of “America Deceived II” before it is completely banned:

    1. Jean2009 says:

So just because the dog’s name is Kilo you are assuming the owner is a druggie or dealer? Well, I have a pet who’s name is “MJ”, so that could stand for maryjane which is another name for pot. So does that mean I am a druggie, or dealer?? No, I have nothing to do with drugs and making the worst assumptions about people will one day get you into trouble. Think before you speak.

      1. UgotJUANupyouraz says:

        Well said.

      2. Basia says:

        Seriously Jean2009,

You have forgotten the meaning of the article.

  31. Steve says:

Pit bulls are great dogs, raise them right. To bad there is a certain culture that have them just for macho reasons.

  32. megan says:

    GOOD DOG KILO!!!!!!!

yup they just get a bad rap becasue people trained them for fighting…they are actually known for being nanny dogs to people used to leave them at home with there kids so they would be safe if anything happened…shit happens and some go nuts but that can be with any breed of dog…Ive been around my share of pits and ive had my own red nose pit…and working in a vet clinic for 2 years and ive never ever had and issue with them….when working there i had the biggest problems with little dogs bitting and poodles and labs that tried to bite me but never the pits they alwasy were well behavied. more often then not its the owners own lack of training that makes the dog what they are. would people be saying these things if it was another breed of dog that protected its owner? NO! then they would all be like “oh wow thats amazing what a brave dog!”
plain and simple this dog put its life at risk to protect its owners without a second thought thats how all dogs should be. treat your animals right and maybe they will do the same as this beautiful brave pit did! I love my pit bull and i wouldnt trade him for anyother dog in this world!!!!

  33. crapkiller says:

Home invasions occur because people in N.Y. cannot get gun permits. As a result, a invader knows that he has a very small chance of getting shot or detained in a residence by the resident. More guns in the hands of citizens stop crime and insure a stable government. Our founding fathers knew this.

  34. MustangLee says:

Pits rule. Been bitten twice in working with a local rescue. Beagle and a beagle mix. Had a terrier mix kill a kitten. The pit that my son is adopting is the sweetest dog we’ve fostered.

    1. glenp827 says:

hate to tell you a PIT BULL TERRIER is a TERRIER so your argument holds no water

      1. megan says:

your an idiot….there are many many terrier breeeds!

every pit bull is a terrier but not every terrier is a pit bull ….think about it

        1. megan says:

and this is to mustanglee…..i worked at a vet clinic for 2 years and i completly agree with u all the problems i ever had and anytime i was bitten it was always everyother breed i never had any problems with the pits that came thru my clinic and there were a ton they were alwasy the most well behaived dogs!

congrats to the new doggie member of your family!

          1. glenp827 says:

how many died of contracting stupidity after they bit you?

        2. glenp827 says:

Megan you tell me “YOUR AN IDIOT” ?? that is laughable coming from an apparent illiterate.

OBTW you agreed with me that pit bull terriers are TERRIERS but apparently too stooopid to realize that. You remind me of my former wife—not the brightest bulb on the string and a LOUSY LAY

  35. greg mitchell says:

The perfect outcome would have been pitbull killed and intruder sentenced.

    1. Steve says:

FU. intuder killed would have been the solution.

    2. joan says:

you are really pathetic. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you make comments like that only to incite anger. And what kind of precious dog do YOU own??

    4. Liberals are cancer says:

Wow – the pup took a bullet to the head, and kept on going.

Then, based upon this incident, all pit bulls are liberal progressives.

I was once told that “if you have to shoot a liberal, don’t shoot them in the head – they’d never notice”.

  36. Joe Joe says:

NY could use a “stand your ground” law. Maybe easier firearm permitting as well.

  37. Christine says:

My pit bull Precious was found in a ditch full of blood in Vallejo California at the age of four months. She’d been used for target practice. She has one eye and walks funny because of multiple gunshot wounds. She is five and a half years old now and sleeps under the covers. She will also rip your head off if you try to hurt me. thank you Vallejo/Benicia Humane. Bravo Kilo!!

    1. Marvin says:

      Should have left it there!
