16-Year-Old Struck, Killed By Minivan On Hempstead Turnpike In Levittown

LEVITTOWN, NY (CBSNewYork) - A 16-year-old man was struck and killed on Wednesday in Levittown when he was hit by a minivan, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Police say that the driver, a 61-year-old woman, was heading west on the Hempstead Turnpike when she hit the victim as he was crossing the street. The police department escorted the pedestrian to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives believe that there was no apparent criminal intent on the part of the driver, and her vehicle has been impounded for a brake test and safety inspection.

Earlier this year, a report released by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign found Hempstead Turnpike to be the most deadliest road in the metropolitan area. There were 15 deadly accidents involving pedestrians from 2008 to 2010 between Franklin Square and East Meadow.
