A 6-year-old boy was killed in an apparent wood chipper accident in southeastern Connecticut Tuesday.

The boy, identified as Jeffrey Bourgeois, and two older siblings were helping their father clear brush from a yard at 24 Brookside Road at the time of the incident, said State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance.

The father had his back turned, and when the boy tried to assist his father by putting a branch into the chipper, he was sucked into the machine, Vance said.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vance said the accident was so horrific that grief counselors were called to the scene to help first responders and the boy's family.

The boy's father owns the company that was working on the site, according to published reports.

Brookside Road was closed to emergency officials during the investigation, and the scene was secured, Vance said.
