Search Continues For Driver Involved In Fatal Brooklyn Hit-And-Run
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are still searching for a driver who they said was involved in a hit-and-run that killed a teenage boy in Brooklyn over the weekend.
Thirteen-year-old Henry Garcia was riding his bike on 20th Avenue in Bensonhurst Saturday afternoon when police said he fell off his bike. That’s when cops said the driver of a green SUV hit the teen and then took off.
Garcia was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Antonio Garcia, the victim’s brother, was the last to speak with him.
“To go home and be careful, the last words he said, he said ‘OK, OK’ and he left,” he said.
Nearby resident Maria Mineo said surveillance cameras mounted on her building captured the accident and police have asked her not to release the video.
She said she also saw the incident unfold from her window and said while the driver didn’t seem to know what happened, another driver may have witnessed it.
“I don’t think he knew what happened. He didn’t speed, didn’t slow down,” she said. “The second car realized it. Didn’t slow down, but looked at the kid, then he left.”
Garcia’s friends and family has been keeping vigil since his death and say they won’t stop until the person responsible is caught.
“We all love him,” said Garcia’s friend, 13-year-old Jasleen Chuck. “He was only 13.”
Garcia was the youngest of five children and dreamed of becoming a soccer player.
