NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Queens high school student has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured the wife of a Sudanese diplomat.

Mawahib Elbahi, whose husband is a diplomat at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Sudan at the United Nations, was with her two young children outside their Astoria apartment building on Tuesday when a bullet struck her in the upper arm.

The mother was caught in the cross-fire during a shootout between rival groups, police said.

The 19-year-old suspect, Miguel Mata, is a student at Long Island City High School.

He’s being charged with attempted murder.
