Giants' First-Round Pick David Wilson: 'I'm A Mix Of Arian Foster And Ray Rice'

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) - The Giants put an end to a lightning-quick first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night by taking running back David Wilson out of Virginia Tech with the 32nd pick overall, filling a need that opened when the team released backup Brandon Jacobs after the season.

And Wilson is more than happy to be with the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants.

The five-foot-nine, 206-pounder spoke with Joe & Evan on WFAN on Friday morning and expressed the joy he felt upon hearing his name called by Big Blue.

"It was an exciting moment for me," Wilson said. "My phone lit up and I started screaming. I'm joining a great club, but I don't know too many people in New Jersey yet."

He may not know many people in the Tri-State area just yet, but he can be sure that he'll be a household name in no time.

The Danville, Virginia native said he knew that it was a slim chance he'd be taken in the first round, but he certainly believes he was deserving of the honor.

"I run bigger than my stats say," the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year said. "I'm going to try to be a hero, I like trying to be a hero. I think I'm a mixture of Arian Foster and Ray Rice with the way I break tackles and make something out of nothing."

Marc Ross, the director of college scouting for the Giants, said Wilson was one of the few players that almost everyone felt was a good football player.

And he's ready to make an impact as soon as he gets the call.

"Whenever I get my opportunity I'm going to take it and try to make a name for myself," Wilson said. "I'm willing to work hard and I'm always getting better. I think I'll have a very successful career in the NFL with the New York Giants."

Wilson is the first running back the Giants have taken in the first round since 2000, when they took Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, who turned out to be a bust.
