Police: 'Metro-North Mugger' Confesses To Series Of Armed Robberies

PELHAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police believe they caught the so-called "Metro-North mugger" responsible for terrorizing Westchester County commuters and putting police departments on high alert since January.

Olivier Famby, a 19-year-old unemployed cabbie from New Rochelle, was arrested Friday after an eagle-eyed police officer spotted him on routine patrol, police announced Monday.

Sgt. Chris Casucci noticed a dark BMW parked just outside the Pelham train station and found Famby in the vehicle.

"He observed a handgun on the driver-side floor board with two or three black gloves," said Pelham Police Chief Joseph Benefico.

Famby was wearing clothing similar to what previous victims had described, officials said.

Police had been searching for the suspect responsible for nine robberies near Metro-North stations in Westchester County, including New Rochelle, the Mamaronecks and Harrison.

Famby has confessed, according to police.

"During interrogation, he confessed to us that he was the one who committed all those robberies," said Pelham Police Department detective John Hynes.

Police said they hope that the arrest would reassure county residents.

"Now the residents of Pelham along with hopefully the county can feel a little more at ease," Hynes said.
