David Wright: Mets Preparing Long-Term Offer? 'That's News To Me'
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Mets have been "quietly preparing" to offer David Wright a long-term contract extension, the Wall Street Journal reported late Sunday.
Talk about hush-hush. If there have been internal talks, consider Wright still in the dark.
"I got nothing. That's news to me," Wright told the New York Post on Monday. "I haven't heard anything. I didn't even hear that report."
Wright and a "well-placed source" both told the paper that the sides haven't engaged in any new negotiations.
"Either way, there haven't been any talks," said Wright. "That's about it."
The Mets lost fellow homegrown star Jose Reyes to the Miami Marlins in free agency this offseason. In fact, they never even gave the shortstop a formal offer. It seems the team's approach will be vastly different when it comes to Wright.
An "aggressive push" to retain the third baseman could come "at some point later this year—perhaps as soon as this summer," according to the Journal.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson "is still assessing Wright's long-term value," the Journal reported, adding there's "no urgency" because of the 29-year-old's $16 million team option for 2013. The franchise would likely consider trading Wright during the offseason if no agreement is reached, an unnamed baseball official told the publication.
Wright has been on fire despite suffering a fractured right pinkie early in the season. His .398 batting average and on-base percentage of .489 lead the National League.
