Fallen Suffolk County Police Officers Remembered In Yaphank

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Over the years, 22 members of the Suffolk County Police Department have died in the line of duty.

On Friday, family, friends, and fellow officers gathered to remember them, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

"You know, sometimes people forget that these officers everyday, they put on that uniform and they step out of their house, they don't know what they're gonna face and they don't know if they're gonna be coming home," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone at the annual service in at police headquarters in Yaphank.

Bellone said today was an important day.

"As part of the Suffolk County police family, they will never be forgotten," Bellone said.

Department Chief James Burke called it a day to reflect on the county's finest and bravest.

"We will never ever forget them, or the memories of their loved ones," Burke said.
