14-Year-Old Long Island Boy Dies After Crashing Jet Ski Into Family's Boat

MATTITUCK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 14-year-old boy died while riding a personal watercraft in Peconic Bay on Long Island on Sunday.

Dominic Trionfo, of Middle Island, took his Jet Ski out in the waters off Mattituck and somehow made a wrong turn, crashing into the anchor chain of his family's boat, his grandfather, John Martinelli, told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.

Trionfo had recently received his license and Sunday was the first time he went out on the jet ski alone, Martinelli said.

"He just made a mistake, it's one in a million," Martinelli said. "It's an open bay and he made a wrong turn."

Trionfo was pronounced dead at the hospital.

New York increased the minimum age for operating a personal watercraft in 2005 from 10-years-old to 14.
