Justin Turner Injures Right Ankle In A Rundown
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Mets shortstop Justin Turner was helped off the field after injuring his right ankle during a rundown at the end of the third inning of Monday's game against Philadelphia.
Turner singled to right field with a runner on and two outs and tried to take second when Phillies right fielder Hunter Pence threw home. Catcher Brian Schneider threw to second baseman Freddy Galvis to start the rundown, and shortstop Jimmy Rollins chased Turner back to first.
Turner fell as he lunged for the bag, and tumbled into foul territory behind the base, where he writhed in pain as Mets staff came out to assist him. After about a minute, he was assisted off the field and taken for x-rays which came back negative.
David Wright moved to shortstop from third base, Vinny Rottino went to third from left field, Scott Hairston went to left field from center and Kirk Nieuwenhuis came in to play center field.
Wright was at shortstop for the second time in his major league career, He played there in the eighth and ninth innings last Aug. 7, when Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy were hurt in a game.
Wright went to his left to scoop up a grounder from Placido Polanco in the fifth and threw sharply to first to retire him, prompting some cheers.
On the play that ended the third, Rob Johnson was held up by third base coach Tim Teufel when the throw went home. Teufel continued to hold him as the rundown developed, but Turner was tagged out before Johnson could cross the plate.
