NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Dessert Professional magazine gathered sweets connoisseurs and media alike at the Institute for Culinary Education earlier this week to honor the top ten pastry chefs from around the country.
New York City chefs accounted for half of those recognized.
Big Apple pastry experts Sandro Micheli from Daniel, Marc Aumont from The Modern, Christina Tosi from Momofuku Milk Bar, Angela Pinkerton from Eleven Madison Park, and Damien Hergott of Bosie Tea Parlor all made the top 10.
Other honorees were Sally Camacho (WP24) in Los Angeles; Craig Harzewski (Naha) in Chicago; Nathaniel Reid (Normal Love Confections) in Naples, FL; Jean-Marie Auboine (Jean-Marie Auboine Chocolatier) in Las Vegas; and Chris Hammer (The School of Pastry Design) also in Las Vegas.
In the crowd were also some big industry names: Johnny Iuzzini (formerly Executive Pastry Chef of Jean-Georges, and seen on Top Chef: Just Desserts), Ron Ben-Israel (host of Dessert Sweet Genius), Zac Young (formerly of Flex Mussels, Flex Donuts, and seen on Top Chef: Just Desserts), Shawn Gawle (Executive Pastry Chef of Corton), Michael Laiskonis (formerly Executive Pastry Chef of Le Bernardin, currently Creative Director of ICE), Pichet Ong (Batch Bakery, and too many to name), along with Fernanda Capobianco (Vegan Divas) were among those mingling and enjoying the special desserts prepared by the honorees.
