Police: Good Samaritan, 17, Shot In Brighton Beach While Breaking Up Robbery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A good Samaritan was hospitalized Wednesday night after what is being hailed as an act of heroism.

Police said 17-year-old Fritz Pascale was trying to prevent four people from robbing a 16-year-old when he was shot in the back in Brighton Beach around 3 p.m.

Pascale was in critical but stable condition on at Lutheran Hospital.

Reporter Holli Haerr of 1010 WINS said the boy's father didn't say much, but told reporters that his son would be "OK."

The incident happened inside a park, near Pascale's school, William E. Grady High School.

Fellow students said Pascale, who is a linebacker on the school's football team, has been known to step in and try to help smaller kids who are bullied.

Police said four people were taken into custody, with charges pending.
