NEW YORK (WFAN) — Rex Ryan’s Jets were the undisputed champions of the back page this offseason, thanks in large part to the acquisition of media sensation Tim Tebow — and the budding quarterback controversy that came with him.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin wasn’t about fret over his Super Bowl-winning squad losing the tabloid battle. As he said in March, “New Yorkers know” who hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.
Osi Umenyiora, happy again after he inked a restructured deal last week with Big Blue, echoed his coach’s comments and then some in an interview Tuesday on the NFL Network.
“At the end of the day, man, we do things a little bit differently out here,” Umenyiora said of the other football team in town. “We go out there on the football field and play. The Jets, you know, they’re a good football team themselves, man, but they have a lot of things going on that a lot of people are interested in, and you know, they’re more interested in that than us going out there and actually winning the Super Bowl.”
But no disrespect. Right?
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” said Umenyiora. “Much respect to the New York Jets, man. Hopefully, things will keep on going that way.”
The defensive claimed in an affidavit last year that Giants general manager Reese reneged on an earlier promise to re-do his contract. Now with some more cash added to his deal, Umenyiora insisted that he and Reese “have always been cool, man.”
“I mean, obviously, business is business, and, you know, out here, in this type of atmosphere, sometimes you have to do some things to get your point across,” he said. “But at the end of the day, man, I understood him, he understood me and we just were able to move forward.”
