CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Hunter Mahan shot a career-low 61 on Sunday at the Travelers Championship, climbing up the leaderboard hours after he nearly missed the 54-hole cut.
Mahan, in the first pair of the day, joked he was just trying to play fast and not hold up the field. He opened with five pars before making nine birdies on the final 13 holes to finish at 9 under for the day.
His 20-foot birdie putt from the edge of the green on 18 put him at 10 under for the tournament, two strokes behind co-leaders Brian Davis and Roland Thatcher, who tee off later Sunday.
Mahan needed a 6-foot birdie on 18 on Saturday to make the cut. The course record at River Highlands is 60, set last year by Patrick Cantlay.
