Police: Armed Carjacking Suspect Shot And Wounded By Cops In Bushwick

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An armed carjacking suspect is listed in critical condition after he was shot by police in Brooklyn, police said.

The shooting occurred late Friday morning on Weirfield Street in Bushwick, 1010 WINS reported.

The incident began when neighbors called police to report a man in a red shirt breaking car windows, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

As they pointed the suspect out to arriving police officers, he allegedly carjacked a passing vehicle.

The suspect forced his way into the back seat of the vehicle and told two people in the front of the car to drive away, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Officers gave chase and pulled the car over before the suspect, who was armed with a gun, began to run, Kelly said.

"Officers pursue him, he turns with a weapon and one round is fired by the police officer," Kelly said.

The suspect was struck once in the head, Kelly said.

He is listed in critical condition at Elmhurst Hospital, EMS said.

A revolver was recovered at the scene, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
