Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Divorcing After 5 Years Of Marriage

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's splitsville for celebrities Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. The power couple announced Friday that they are getting divorced.

Their very public, whirlwind romance sparked rampant speculation from the very beginning and now Cruise claims Holmes is the one who is calling it quits.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out," Cruise's representative said.

It was the couch jump seen around the world in 2005 when a downright giddy Cruise professed his love for Holmes on the Oprah show, CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported.

One month after the couch leap that would live in infamy, Cruise proposed to the "Dawson's Creek" star, who is 16 years younger than him, on top of the Eiffel Tower. By October 2005, the couple announced they were expecting and Suri Cruise was born the following April.

Tom and Katie married in a Scientology ceremony just a few months later in November 2006 at a 15th Century castle in Italy.

But now, it's over for the superstars.

"What I know is that Tom is either the greatest actor ever, or he was completely blinded by this," said The Insider's Brooke Anderson.

Anderson interviewed Cruise on the red carpet just days ago.

"I am very happy, very happy, very lucky. I'm doing something I love, great family, wife and children," Cruise said.

The sad news came just days before Cruise was set to celebrate his 50th birthday next Tuesday.

"Tom told us all about his plans for his 50th birthday next month and all of those plans included being with Katie," said Lesley Messer of People magazine.

Katie's representative, meanwhile, told People: "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

If TomKat's love was on the rocks, no one in Hollywood seemed to know. In fact, Cruise professed to Playboy just last month that he was "happy" and had been since the moment he met her.

Prominent celebrity divorce attorney Bernard Clair said the two have an iron-clad prenuptial agreement that will dictate how much money Holmes will get. Clair said little is likely to leak as the Hollywood hotshots head to divorce court, given New York's reputation for keeping filings private.

"If I had any advice to the parties, it would be to maintain a calm, objective, neutral settlement posture, if for no other reason to keep Suri out of the mix," Clair said.

Holmes has been expanding her acting chops in recent years.

Frequently in New York City, she last starred on Broadway in "All My Sons" in 2008. Cruise has been jet-setting recently, promoting his latest flick, "Rock of Ages."

It was Cruise's third marriage after previously being hitched to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. It was Holmes' first marriage.
