Car Fire Leaves One Dead In Medford, Foul Play Not Ruled Out

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are investigating a car fire that involved a fatality in Medford. Witnesses said that they heard an explosion and then saw the SUV go up in flames.

The fire happened in a parking lot behind the stores on Route 112 near Jamaica Ave.

"I saw the flame and smoke, a woman was standing in the parking lot screaming," said Ekram Demiroz, a pizza maker at Tony's Pizza.

Detectives with Suffolk County Homicide began investigating shortly after 3 o'clock this afternoon.

A body was found in the car after the fire was put out. Investigators said that it was possible that an accelerant was used in the fire but arson investigators have yet to confirm that.
