Fatal Early-Morning Shooting Rocks Quiet, Calm Streets Of Cliffside Park

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - It was just after 4:30 on Sunday morning when the normally quiet streets of Cliffside Park turned quite chaotic, as bullets were flying around Anderson Avenue.

One man was shot multiple times to death after he allegedly had an argument with another man, which may have started in a nearby bar. The assailant allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at the victim several times, causing him to drop on the sidewalk in agony.

Residents called 911, but one told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck that many neighbors didn't come out of their houses when they heard the noise because "gunfire just doesn't happen here."

"It makes you think twice about the area that you're living in," the resident, who has lived in the town for 35 years, said. "I heard the 'bang, bang, bang' and I thought it was fireworks. And then I heard a car take off up the street. Terrible, terrible thing."

Witnesses told police that the shooter fled by car with a woman in the passenger's seat, driving up in a dark-colored vehicle on Columbia Avenue.

"I'm a little petrified," the resident admitted. "I'm making sure that my doors are double-locked and that I don't go out at night."

On this retail strip lined with cafes, beauty parlors and dance studios, the talk on Sunday was all about violence coming to Cliffside Park.

Police have arrested a Garfield man and one other person in connection with the shooting.
