NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Getting a lot of buzz from both readers and critics – including The New York Times – is a must-read book for the summer, titled “The Age Of Miracles.”

The debut novel by author Karen Thompson Walker is a coming-of-age story and an “end of the world” book which takes place in California, where Thompson Walker grew up.

She said her home state definite was a major influence in writing the novel.

“You’re always…slightly aware of an earthquake or a brush fire could happen and change your life, but most of the time you don’t think about it,” the author said while visiting the Couch. “That feeling of living with the uncertainty of a natural disaster…but you mostly go on with ordinary life is something I wanted to capture in this book which is about a catastrophe even bigger than the big one.”
