Eat Yourself Thin: Metabolism-Boosting Bites

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Is it possible to eat yourself thin?

It may sound too good to be true, but there are certain foods you can eat to help boost your metabolism in an effort to lose weight.

Keri Glassman, a dietician and contributor to Women's Health magazine stopped by The Couch show us the best foods to eat to get started.

As she points out, we are all given a certain set of genes, but there are steps we can take to help our weight loss along.

"Exercise, eat breakfast, and then eat enough calories so that we don't go into starvation mode and slow down our metabolism," Glassman said.

So, exactly which foods should you be incorporating into your diet?

Start with salmon. The fish is packed with omega-3s, which act as an anti-inflammatory and help us burn fat.

"I like to incorporate salmon at least a couple of times a week," Glassman said.

She also recommended nuts.

"In small portions, they can be a dieter's best friend," Glassman said. "The crunch alone can make them satisfying…but they're also loaded with protein and fiber."

Try having 10-15 nuts as a snack or topped on a salad.

And don't skip the spicy foods! As Glassman points out, red pepper flakes have an antioxidant called capsaicin which has been shown to give our metabolisms a boost.

"Spicy food can also make you satisfied so you eat less," Glassman said.

Some other metabolism-boosting bites: Coffee, green tea and grapefruit.
